Michigan State HC Mark Dantonio indicated that redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor is the current front-runner to start in 2016.

"O’Connor will go in as the leader at that situation," Dantonio said. He wouldn't go so far as to inking the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder in as a guaranteed starter for 2016, though. "That’s going to bear out over August camp and really over the first couple games. We’ll see how everybody performs. But we’re going to give everybody opportunities." For his career, O'Connor's attempted just 54 passes, completing 63% of them for 133 yards and a 4/2 TD/INT ratio. In addition to him, Dantonio's also giving redshirt freshman Brian Lewerke and true freshman Messiah deWeaver opportunities to compete. Said Sparty's head honcho, "I think it’ll be an exciting quarterback race and we expect great performance there. You’ve got to play, though, in the games and be consistent, be a playmaker."

Michigan State freshman QB Tyler O'Connor is expected to redshirt the 2012 season.

"I’m nowhere near where these guys are, so it’s good for me to sit, and I’m learning a lot every day," said O’Connor. "It’s the right thing for sure." O'Connor admitted the speed of the game has been his biggest hurdle thus far, but rooming with likely starter Andrew Maxwell will help his development.
