Michigan HC Mark Dantonio indicated that redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor and redshirt junior QB Damion Terry will both play against Penn State on Saturday.
O'Connor has taken the bulk of quarterbacking starts for Sparty this season, throwing for 1,852 yards with a 16/9 TD/INT ratio. Terry has played considerably less, having attempted just 34 passes on the season. He will see additional opportunities this weekend due to the fact that backup/occasional-starter Brian Lewerke is recovering from a broken tibia. Michigan State limps into Saturday's showdown with the Nittany Lions holding a 3-8 record. Nov 22 - 4:34 PM

Date:

Michigan State redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor will draw the start against Illinois on Saturday.

With Brian Lewerke sidelined due to a broken tibia, O'Connor was something of an easy choice to start this weekend. HC Mark Dantonio indicated that junior QB Damion Terry could also potentially see playing time. In parts of seven games, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound O'Connor has thrown for 1,341 yards with a 12/7 TD/INT ratio. Michigan State is currently mired in a six-game losing streak. They sit at 0-5 in the Big Ten. Contests against Illinois and Rutgers over the next two weekends will provide them legitimate chances to snap that win-less skid in conference. The Spartans close out on a considerably tougher two-step, though, against Ohio State and Penn State.
Nov 4 - 1:06 PM

Michigan State redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor is listed as co-starter in advance of Saturday's game against Maryland.

O'Connor saw himself benched for Brian Lewerke prior to last weekend's tilt with Northwestern. After Lewerke proved relatively ineffective, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound redshirt senior came on in relief to throw for 281 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Sparty ultimately fell by a 54-40 final score, but O'Connor may well have salvaged his starting job with the nice performance. To be determined. Lewerke is listed at co-starter along with O'Connor on this week's depth chart. Expect an official decision on the starter to come closer to Saturday's kickoff.

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline believes Michigan State redshirt senior Tyler O'Connor may have already punted his opportunity to get drafted.

"There was a thought coming into the season O’Connor, who filled in for Connor Cook on occasion last season, would turn himself into a draftable prospect but that has yet to happen and probably won’t occur," Pauline wrote. Indeed, O’Connor was benched in Saturday's overtime loss to Indiana, Sparty's third consecutive loss. O’Connor has logged an uninspiring 8/5 TD/INT rate this fall.
Oct 12 - 2:34 PM

Michigan State listed redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor, redshirt junior QB Damion Terry and redshirt freshman QB Brian Lewerke as co-starters in advance of Saturday's game against Northwestern.

O'Connor won the job out of August camp, but he has slowly (but surely) began to lose his grip on the starting gig due to a wave of ineffective performances. While the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder threw five touchdowns over his first two games, he has thrown a total of three in the three games since (all of which came against Indiana two weekends ago). Terry came on to replace O'Connor at the end of Saturday's loss to BYU. A firm starter should shake out over the remainder of the practice week.

Michigan State will stick with redshirt senior Tyler O'Connor as the school's starting QB.

Michigan State lost to Indiana 24-21 in overtime, where O'Connor completed 21 of 35 for 263 yards with three touchdowns. On their own the statistics look great, however, critics point to two sacks in overtime and a fumble that possibly could have been avoided. Even Dantonio called O'Connor's play slightly above average. The team is still a work in progress after the departure of Connor Cook.
Oct 3 - 9:17 AM

Michigan State redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor completed 21-of-35 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 24-21 overtime loss to Indiana.

Overtime would not have been birthed into existence in this game had it not been for O'Connor. His third touchdown pass of the contest -- a two-yarder to Josiah Price -- came with just 17 seconds remaining in the contest and knotted the score at 21-all. Alas for Sparty, no such magic would touch O'Connor's shoulders in overtime. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder has thrown for multiple touchdowns in three of four games this season. In the lone outlier (against Wisconsin last weekend) he threw zero touchdowns and three interceptions.
Oct 2 - 12:03 AM

Michigan State redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor completed 19-of-26 passes for 241 yards, an interception and two touchdowns in Saturday's 36-28 win over Notre Dame.

Sparty was something of a mystery entering this game, as we had yet to see them play a real opponent. They opened the season with a win over Furman and subsequently rested up on a bye last weekend. They looked sharp against Notre Dame on Saturday, though, with O'Connor making several clutch, difficult throws. He tossed both of his touchdowns in the second quarter. Michigan State starts into their conference schedule against Wisconsin next Saturday.
Sep 17 - 11:33 PM

Michigan State redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor completed 13-of-18 passes for 190 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in Friday's win over Furman.

The Spartans weren't exactly blowing Furman off the map here, scoring a solitary touchdown in each quarter to finish with 28 points as a team. Despite the lack of fireworks, O'Connor played well in his starting debut. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder averaged 10.6 YPA, but it took a little while for him to throw his first touchdown pass. He wouldn't do so until he found Felton Davis III on a 13-yard scoring pass with 3:19 remaining before halftime. He would loosen up to throw a pair after coming out of the locker room for the second half. Sparty won't play again until September 17, but when they do, their opponent will be just slightly more imposing than Furman -- that would be Notre Dame.
Sep 2 - 10:35 PM

Michigan State announced that redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor will start.

"He's the No. 1 guy," coach Mark Dantonio said. "He's had a good enough camp to say that at this point." O'Connor, who appeared in four games last season and threw for 133 yards and two touchdowns, will replace Connor Cook under center. He beat out senior Damion Terry and sophomore Brian Lewerke, who will now battle for No. 2 duties.

FOX Sports' Stewart Mandel says it would be a "shocker" if Michigan State redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor does not start the opener.

O'Connor built a big lead on junior Damion Terry and redshirt freshman Brian Lewerke for the starting job this spring, but HC Mark Dantonio has yet to name a starter. That'll happen in August.

Jun 20 - 5:08 PM

Michigan State redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor exited the spring with a big lead on Damion Terry for the starting job.

This competition hasn't been shut down yet, but O'Connor will begin with a sizeable head start this summer. Whoever Connor Cook's heir apparent turns out to be, he'll have a strong supporting cast around him. RB L.J. Scott has been called Sparty's new-age Le'Veon Bell and the receiving group, headlined by R.J. Shelton, Donnie Corley and Cam Chambers and filled out by high-profile recruits, is deep.
May 20 - 9:11 PM

Michigan State QB coach Brad Salem says redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor "really knows where to go with the football."

"Now, it's can you do it from a consistent, day-to-day opportunity? He has gotten much better since he has played in a big game [Ohio State]," Salem said. Michigan State HC Mark Dantonio indicated recently that the 6-foot-3, 205-pound O'Connor is the front-runner to start over Damion Terry.

Apr 18 - 7:51 PM

Michigan State HC Mark Dantonio indicated that redshirt senior QB Tyler O'Connor is the current front-runner to start in 2016.

"O’Connor will go in as the leader at that situation," Dantonio said. He wouldn't go so far as to inking the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder in as a guaranteed starter for 2016, though. "That’s going to bear out over August camp and really over the first couple games. We’ll see how everybody performs. But we’re going to give everybody opportunities." For his career, O'Connor's attempted just 54 passes, completing 63% of them for 133 yards and a 4/2 TD/INT ratio. In addition to him, Dantonio's also giving redshirt freshman Brian Lewerke and true freshman Messiah deWeaver opportunities to compete. Said Sparty's head honcho, "I think it’ll be an exciting quarterback race and we expect great performance there. You’ve got to play, though, in the games and be consistent, be a playmaker."
Mar 22 - 4:59 PM

Michigan State freshman QB Tyler O'Connor is expected to redshirt the 2012 season.

"I’m nowhere near where these guys are, so it’s good for me to sit, and I’m learning a lot every day," said O’Connor. "It’s the right thing for sure." O'Connor admitted the speed of the game has been his biggest hurdle thus far, but rooming with likely starter Andrew Maxwell will help his development.
