Panthers selected Stanford RB Tyler Gaffney with the No. 204 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Gaffney (5-foot-11 1/2, 220) spent one season as the Cardinal's feature runner, rushing 330 times for 1,709 yards (5.18 YPC) and 21 scores as a senior. He managed 32 career catches. Although Gaffney ran 4.49 at the Combine, his underwhelming 9-foot-8 broad jump is more indicative of his explosiveness. He is a sluggish grinder in the Jackie Battle mold, lacks lateral agility, and only gets what's blocked. Gaffney projects as a No. 2 or 3 back in the pros, and may have to demonstrate special teams value to forge a long career. He's not going to push Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams or Kenjon Barner. Scouts Inc.'s Steve Muench believes Stanford senior RB Tyler Gaffney's pass protection needs some work.

"Stanford RB Tyler Gaffney has quick feet for size and always moving forward. Also catches ball well but pass pro needs work," Muench tweeted. Gaffney is a workhorse back who has the ability to wear down defenses with his running style, but lacks the ideal explosion. He could be a complimentary piece to a NFL backfield at the next level and could be a third day selection. Our own Josh Norris sees flashes of Jackie Battle in Gaffney.

Gaffney is the backbone of Stanford's offense, and even though he doesn't break off long runs, his consistency is vital to their success. The Cardinal have used Kevin hogan in a game manager role, but for some reason they allowed him to pass in important situations during this game. The result was a loss.

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah calls Stanford senior RB Tyler Gaffney "a possible late-round pick."

Gaffney attempted a school-record 45 carries for 157 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 26-20 upset victory over Oregon. Gaffney, a former farmhand with the Pittsburgh Pirates, ranks fourth in the nation with 12 rushing touchdowns. "He lacks ideal suddenness, but he showed excellent vision and he finishes every run," wrote Jeremiah. Gaffney is the sort of reliable straight-line sledgehammer that should hang around the NFL for a few years in a short-yard specialist role.
