Packers selected Mississippi State DL Josh Boyd with the No. 167 overall pick.
Boyd (6-foot-3, 310) was a 3 1/2-year starter for the Bulldogs, recording 33 tackles -- 2.5 for a loss -- and 1.5 sacks as a senior, also blocking one kick. He ran 5.14 at the Combine before pumping 32 reps on the bench. Boyd flashed penetrating, three-technique type ability in the SEC, but was an inconsistent performer and lacks explosive measurables. National Football Post's Russ Lande writes Mississippi State DL Josh Boyd could develop into a starter in the NFL.

"A well-built defensive tackle who looks bigger "on the hoof" than his measured size, Boyd’s combination of size, strength and athleticism is starting caliber," Lande writes. "Consistently quick moving at the snap, when Boyd maintains leverage he can lock-out and press offensive lineman with ease. He can either anchor to clog up the inside run or shed the block and make tackle. Although he lacks the explosiveness and premier speed to get backfield penetration to make tackles consistently behind the LOS, he is able to use his quickness of the ball and strength to press the gap to disrupt blocking schemes. Additionally, he has surprising playing speed chasing down ball carriers along the LOS in pursuit. I expect Boyd will be a late round selection, but if he can become more consistent playing with leverage he could develop into a quality starter."

Mississippi State DT Josh Boyd ran a 4.98 forty at the school's Pro Day.

Boyd ran an official 5.14 at the Combine, so this run was a big improvement. Pauline considers the Bulldog a "true 3-technique moving towards April," since he thrives on quick hands and penetration to disrupt opposing backfields.

Mississippi State senior DT Josh Boyd will attend the East-West Shrine Game.

This is another big get for the Shrine Game, since Boyd was likely a fringe Senior Bowl talent. He certainly isn't on Fletcher Cox's level of talent, but Boyd possesses active hands and some penetration ability if he wins off the snap.

SI's Tony Pauline believes Mississippi State DT Josh Boyd's evaluation is sliding.

According to Pauline, Boyd "was handled all day in one-on-one blocking" against Georgia on Saturday. He adds that the senior was "Rated as a potential third-round pick entering the season," but Boyd has "played more like a last day choice this year." With just 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and six quarterback hurries on the season, the box scores backup this opinion.
