Tennessee junior WR Alton Howard will take a leave of absence during spring practices.
It hasn't been determined how long he'll be away from the team. Tennessee head coach Butch Jones said Howard is dealing with personal issues, but declined to comment further due to privacy policies. Howard finished second on the team with 388 receiving yards and hauled in three touchdown catches as a sophomore in 2013. Mar 5 - 7:15 PM

Tennessee will rely on sophomore Alton Howard to be the team's top WR in 2013.

The young receiver does not have a large body of work, catching just 13 passes last season behind four targets who now play in the NFL. "We have to have the ability to spit a five-yard throw out and turn it into a 25-yard gain," Butch Jones said. "The only way you do it is with our slot receivers."

Tennessee freshman WR Alton Howard will miss preseason practices after undergoing surgery on his left foot.

No specifics of the surgery or injury were given. Howard, a four-star recruit in the freshman class, had impressed veteran teammates with his speed and elusiveness in spring practice. At 5'9/178 pounds he offers a different skill set than big time receivers junior Justin Hunter and junior Da'Rick Rogers and could return to practice early in the season.
