Saints selected California LB Khairi Fortt with the No. 126 overall pick in the NFL draft.
Fortt (6-foot-2, 248) spent two seasons at Cal after transferring from Penn State, but played in only nine games due to a knee injury. He manned Will 'backer for the Bears, recording 64 tackles -- 3.5 for a loss -- and a half-sack. An excellent athlete, Fortt ran 4.7-flat at the Combine with a 36-inch vertical and 10-foot broad jump, pumping 30 reps on the bench. Fortt projects as an athletic inside linebacker in Rob Ryan's 3-4 scheme, with starting capability down the road, assuming his knee holds up. He'll likely focus on special teams as a rookie. Cal junior LB Khairi Fortt will enter the NFL draft.

Fortt is a Penn State transfer and left the school at the same time as Silas Redd. "One NFL scout, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, thinks the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Fortt has the makings of a solid NFL outside linebacker and could be ideal for a 3-4 defense," Kristian Dyer writes.

Current Cal junior LB, and Penn State transfer, Khairi Fortt will likely redshirt this season while recovering from knee surgery.

"He hasn't practiced in pads at all," head coach Jeff Tedford said. "Until his knee is 100 percent, we're not going to put him in position to play." Fortt was considered one of the top Penn State transfers this offseason and should contribute next season, potentially in a starting role.

Penn State junior LB Khairi Fortt has decided to transfer to Cal after visiting the school this past weekend, according to Rivals' Ryan Gorcey.

Fortt's father had previously said that the projected starting inside linebacker had around 12 offers, but Cal appeared to be his first visit. The Golden Bears are attempting to reload on defense talent, specifically at the linebacker position after losing second-round pick Mychal Kendricks to the NFL. Fortt has a great chance to contribute immediately. Fortt's family insists that a decision has yet to be made.

Penn State junior LB Khairi Fortt is visiting Cal this weekend, according to Dave Ruden.

Ruden also added that Fortt's father said the linebacker has offers from about 12 schools, including Florida State, Kansas State, and TCU. Fortt has a legitimate chance to start at any one of those schools, specifically Penn State, after he tallied six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in part time duty last season.
