Vikings selected UConn DT Shamar Stephen with the No. 220 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Stephen (6-foot-4 7/8, 309) was a three-year starter for the Huskies, finishing his career with 17 tackles for loss and five sacks. More clogger-container than pass rusher, Stephen managed a 5.23 forty at the Combine with an 8-foot-7 broad jump and 25 reps on the bench. Stephen is a five-technique prospect who could contribute as a Kendall Langford-style run stopper. Already 23 1/2 years old, Stephen's long-range ceiling is limited. Sat, May 10, 2014 05:42:00 PM

UConn DT Shamar Stephen "gave glimpses of pass rush ability" at Senior Bowl week, according to Director Phil Savage.

"One of the real unknown prospects coming into the week, Shamar gave glimpses of pass rush ability, in addition to having the size/strength to defend the run," said Savage. "He should be a 3rd-day consideration in the 2014 NFL Draft." UConn interim head coach T.J. Weist told the media in December that pro scouts were showing interest in Stephen and called the senior a "force inside."

UConn interim head coach T.J. Weist said scouts are coming in to see senior DT Shamar Stephen.

Weist notes this is due to Stephen's consistency, and the senior is a "force inside, gets better every game." He has recorded nine tackles for loss, including two sacks this season. Stephen missed a portion of last season with a sprained right knee.

Connecticut junior DT Shamar Stephen has been sidelined in practice due to a sprained right knee.

Stephen has been riding the bike on the side of practice and should receive his MRI results today. "I’m optimistic that it’s not going to be a long, drawn out deal," head coach Paul Pasqualoni said. Sophomore Angelo Pruitt lined up with the first team in place of Stephen.
