Stanford senior QB Josh Nunes is medically retiring.
During a weight lifting session, Nunes felt his right shoulder pop, then the weight fell on his upper body, tearing his right chest muscle. Obviously this is Nunes' throwing arm, and the surgery to attach the muscle will make it difficult to throw the football at the same level. Evan Crower and Dallas Lloyd are now expected to compete for the No. 2 job behind Kevin Hogan. Tue, Apr 30, 2013 09:21:00 AM

Stanford head coach David Shaw named junior Josh Nunes the team's starting QB.

The decision comes as a bit of a surprise, as redshirt sophomore Brett Nottingham was pegged by many as the projected starter during offseason workouts. Nunes showed more understanding off coverages and threw fewer interceptions during preseason workouts, which allowed him emerge as a viable option, but he does not have the arm talent that Nottingham possesses. The junior has only attempted two career throws.
