Cal junior LB Dave Wilkerson has been granted a release to transfer.
The Bears' linebacking corps suffered an awful weekend, as fellow backup Nathan Broussard was lost for the season to a torn ACL in his left knee sustained during Saturday's scrimmage. Wilkerson started three games at outside linebacker in 2011 before missing last season with a right ankle injury. The former four-star recruit also served a medical redshirt in 2010. "He just came in and said it wasn't working out. We agreed," Cal coach Sonny Dykes said of Wilkerson. "It's just kind of time to move on." Tue, Aug 20, 2013 01:15:00 PM

Cal sophomore LB Dave Wilkerson will miss the 2012 season after undergoing surgery to repair an injured right ankle.

Wilkerson started three games at outside linebacker last season but moved inside during the offseason. He already used his medical redshirt in 2010, so WIlkerson may only have two years of eligibility when he returns. Penn State transfer Khairi Fortt is expected to practice more next week after recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, so he could take over Wilkerson's lost snaps.
