Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley admitted that the team's defense struggles with pre-snap reads.
"We are a little bit of a mess before the ball is even snapped," Dooley said. Safeties coach Josh Conklin added, "That's part of being on a new staff, part of being a new defense. That's part of the growing pains." Statistically speaking, the Vols defense is ranked 99th nationally after switching from a 4-3 to Sal Sunseri's 3-4 scheme. Wed, Oct 31, 2012 07:33:00 PM

Tennessee senior LB Herman Lathers and sophomore LB Curt Maggitt are expected to play against Florida after missing time with injuries.

Lathers has been recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in the opener while Maggitt has been out with a toe injury. Lathers has missed plenty of time in the past few seasons, but was expected to be a key figure in the Vols new 3-4 base defense.

Tennessee senior LB Herman Lathers was sidelined during the second half of the team's opener against NC State with a right shoulder injury.

Lathers started at inside linebacker but was seen with his right shoulder in a sling while sitting on the bench after halftime. The Vol has had numerous setbacks in his career, even starting at the age of ten when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. After overcoming that obstacle, Lathers fractured his ankle and missed the entire 2011 season. He redshirted in 2008, so hopefully this shoulder injury is not serious.
