Cal junior RB Brendan Bigelow has decided to practice and play without a knee brace.

Bigelow suffered a torn meniscus last year and rehabbed throughout the offseason. He didn't enjoy playing with the bulky brace, and he ditched it during practice this week. "It's given me more confidence," Bigelow said of his decision. "I'm making cuts that I haven't been able to make. I feel loose, I definitely feel a lot faster, and I'm moving better." Offensive coordinator Tony Franklin said Bigelow "looked like the guy that we saw glimpses of last year" in practice this week.

Cal junior RB Brendan Bigelow expects to be back to full speed this fall after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

He missed spring practice due to the procedure, and this is the third knee operation Bigelow has gone through. The running back tore his ACL in back to back seasons while in high school. Despite the knee issues, Bigelow has registered real flash plays when given the opportunity, and expects to see more touches this year.

Cal sophomore RB Brendan Bigelow carried the ball four times for 160 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's loss to Ohio State.

Bigelow was good for two big plays, the first an 81 yard run and the second a respectable 59 yards. Cal failed to use him in the final possessions, however, and could not pull out the major upset. The sophomore seems to have broken out as a home run threat.
