Falcons selected Connecticut LB Yawin Smallwood with the No. 253 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Smallwood (6-foot-2, 246) was the Huskies' starting middle linebacker for three seasons, tallying 27 career tackles for loss with 9.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. He was a first-team all-conference pick as both a sophomore and junior, before turning pro. Unfortunately, Smallwood trudged a 5.01 forty at the Combine, with a sub-par 9-foot broad jump. He's a better athlete than the measurables indicate, but was an inconsistent college tackler and is still learning to efficiently use his hands. Smallwood has longer-range starting upside, but figures to open his career on special teams. Sat, May 10, 2014 07:04:00 PM

The Falcons privately worked out UConn LB Yawin Smallwood.

The 6-foot-2, 246-pounder collected 336 tackles over the past three seasons, including 118 last year. Smallwood, who started every game at middle linebacker for the Huskies in 2013, strained his left hamstring while logging a 5.01 forty at the NFL scouting combine. He's projected to go in the middle rounds.

UConn LB Yawin Smallwood could be limited to positional drills at the school's pro day due to a a tweaked hamstring.

Smallwood's Combine performance was likely hampered by the same injury, has he posted a 5.01 forty, 36.5 inch vertical and a 108 inch broad jump. The inside linebacker class is a bit weak, and Smallwood should hear his name called around the fourth-round.

UConn redshirt junior LB Yawin Smallwood will declare for the NFL draft.

Smallwood is one of the few talented players on UConn's defense and projects as an inside linebacker in the NFL. The position might be somewhat week in this year's class, and we see Smallwood as a likely second day selection. He registered two sacks against Marshall on Saturday.

UConn redshirt junior LB Yawin Smallwood will enter the 2014 NFL Draft, according to draft insider Tony Pauline.

"A northeast scout for an AFC North team told me they've been doing plenty of advanced scouting in anticipation for Smallwood’s entry into the draft," Pauline adds. The Husky projects as a mid-round selection at inside linebacker, and Pauline compares Smallwood to David Harris.

Connecticut named OC/WR coach T.J. Weist interim coach.

UConn fired head coach Paul Pasqualoni and sent him off with a $750,000 severance package earlier in the day. The 0-4 Huskies have been embarrassed by the likes of Towson and Buffalo this season, but the talent is on hand to potentially pull off a few upsets if Weist can quickly right the ship. UConn stayed within 11 points of 3-0 Maryland and should have beaten 4-0 Michigan on September 21 (they choked away a second-half lead and lost by a field goal). The Huskies have a much-needed bye week on tap and are preparing to host a winnable game against 0-4 South Florida on October 12.

UConn has fired head coach Paul Pasqualoni.

Pasqualoni, who was in the midst of his third season with the Huskies, had led UConn to an 0-4 record this year. The head coach received a $750,000 buyout. The Huskies were close to beating Michigan two weeks ago, but lost in blowout fashion to Towson in the season opener and Buffalo this weekend.

UConn redshirt junior LB Yawin Smallwood made 16 tackles in the loss to Towson on Thursday night.

Towson rushed for over 200 yards against the Hukies, but Smallwood did his best to put UConn's defense on his back. They had plenty of defensive talent that left for the NFL, but this performance was embarrassing for UConn. Smallwood made two solo stops, with 14 assisted and none made behind the line of scrimmage.

SI's Tony Pauline called UConn redshirt sophomore LB Yawin Smallwood's performance versus Maryland "incredible".

Smallwood registered 17 tackles, four for loss, and three sacks, one forced fumble and had numerous passes defended on the day. Pauline says Smallwood "forcefully defended the run, showed strength on the blitz as well as smarts in pass coverage" and called the third year sophomore a three-down linebacker in the NFL.
