Steelers selected Oregon State WR Markus Wheaton with the No. 79 overall pick.
The Steelers — who have a remarkable recent record drafting receivers — begin the process of replacing Mike Wallace. It was Wallace whom Wheaton (5-11, 189) was compared to at the Senior Bowl. Wheaton is an absolute burner, playing faster than his 4.45 forty indicates. He caught 91 passes for 1,244 yards (13.7 YPR) and 11 touchdowns as a senior, taking the lid off Pac-12 defenses. He was regularly the most explosive player on the field. A dynamic downfield target, Wheaton also drew pre-draft comparison to Brandon Lloyd. His play speed is much closer to Wallace's. Oregon State WR Markus Wheaton is higher than Cal WR Keenan Allen on some teams' boards, per Tony Pauline.

"Wheaton does not possess the size of Patton or Swope yet his playing speed is slightly better," Pauline writes. The receiver recently visited the Panthers and Cowboys. A team could get a very good player in the early part of the second-round if he lasts that long.

Scouts Inc. ranks Oregon State WR Markus Wheaton as the 87th best prospect in the 2013 NFL Draft.

This puts Wheaton as the 10th best receiver in the draft. We like Wheaton quite a bit more, but the top of the receiver class is very good, with a nice blend of outside and slot targets. The Oregon State Beaver made a living taking the top off coverages, but his ability to break off his routes with speed is very good.

To kick off his Shutdown 50 list of NFL prospects, Doug Farrar listed Oregon State WR Markus Wheaton at No. 50.

Farrar doesn't think Wheaton has the same kind of vertical speed as Mike Wallace or Desean Jackson, but "with his understanding of the route tree, he doesn't have to be." Farrar then projects Wheaton fitting best in an offense with west coast offense principles and draws a comparison to Brandon Lloyd.

Oregon State WR Markus Wheaton with the Green Bay Packers at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Wheaton, a well-known track star, is a speedy wide receiver that can take the lid off of defenses. He compares to Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace, although he's not as tight in the hips as Wallace is. He would offer the Packers another quality receiver and perhaps most importantly, a consistent vertical threat.

Oregon State senior WR Markus Wheaton reminds Scouts Inc.'s Kevin Weidl of Mike Wallace.

"Speed, speed, speed," Weidl said of Wheaton. "He's a guy that can stretch the field vertically or can create after the catch." Weidl does add that Wheaton is a little bit tight, but a comparison to Wallace is glowing praise for a receiver hoping to take the top off coverages.
