Raiders selected Western Kentucky S Jonathan Dowling with the No. 247 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Dowling (6-foot-3, 190) spent two seasons with the Hilltoppers after transferring from Florida, posting eight forced fumbles and nine interceptions across his sophomore and junior years. A long, plus-sized safety with range, Dowling has 33 1/8-inch arms and ran 4.52 at the Combine with a 33 1/2-inch vertical. Dowling is making a leap in competition coming out of the Sun Belt, but has starting-caliber tools and can function at either safety spot. He has a good chance at cracking the Raiders' 53-man roster. There's a "distinct possibility" the Saints will use a late-round pick on Western Kentucky's Jonathan Dowling if they decide to take a S, according to draft insider Tony Pauline.

They view Dowling "as the perfect compliment to Kenny Vaccaro," writes Pauline. Dowling has a great frame -- he goes 6-foot-3, 198-pounds -- but the Hilltopper, a Florida transfer, has plenty of questions surrounding him, as NFL Media draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote in February: "Talks too much and shows off-putting body language. Questionable mental toughness. Character, maturity and coachability should be looked into." The former four-star recruit was a first-team All-Sun Belt selection last season.

Western Kentucky S Jonathan Dowling isn't as good as he thinks he is, writes NFL Media draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki.

"Talks too much and shows off-putting body language," Nawrocki wrote. "Questionable mental toughness. Character, maturity and coachability should be looked into." Dowling, a Florida transfer, declared for the draft after his junior campaign. The former four-star recruit was a first-team All-Sun Belt selection last season. Dowling has nice range and can make plays on the ball in the air. The 6-foot-3, 198-pounder played two seasons with the Hilltoppers.

Scouts Inc.'s Kevin Weidl notes to keep an eye on Western Kentucky junior S Jonathan Dowling during the 2013 season.

Dowling is a "playmaker in coverage (with) range and excellent ball skills," Weidl tweeted. "Big time game (versus) Kentucky." The former Florida Gator was a big part of the school's recruiting class in 2010, but made his presence felt during his first season with the Hilltoppers in 2012. Dowling was suspended for a game last season after a hit was classified as a "flagrant and dangerous act."
