Iowa senior RB Mark Weisman rushed for 134 yards on 24 carries in Saturday's 30-14 win over Illinois.
Weisman led the Hawkeyes' rushing attack on its way to a season-high 304 yards on the ground. The 6-foot, 240-pound back wasn't able to find the end zone, but averaged 5.8 YPC (as compared to his season average of 4.0 YPC). Iowa built on a 9-7 halftime lead largely because Weisman and company gassed the defense with repeated rushes. The senior isn't an explosive rusher, but could find himself with a camp invite for a team looking for a Mike Alstott clone. Sun, Nov 16, 2014 02:17:00 PM

Iowa senior running back Mark Weisman rushed 14 times for 21 yards in Saturday's 51-14 loss to Minnesota.

After taking the Floyd Rosedale trophy for two years running in the rivalry, the Hawkeyes gave it back in a big way on Saturday. Minnesota bottled up Mark Weisman and held Iowa to a season-low 84 yards rushing. Things started up well, as the senior scored on a short run in the first. The entire running game died after that touchdown. Weisman's only averaging 3.7 YPC this season, and he probably won't be drafted, but he's a big-bodied runner at 6-foot, 240 pounds, and could conceivably hook on in training camp next summer as a short-yardage back.

Iowa senior running back Mark Weisman rushed 20 times for 94 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 48-7 win over Northwestern.

Weisman would have had even more carries to pad those yardage stats, a season-high anyway, against the Wildcats' porous run defense were it not for the fact that this game got out of hand early (Iowa led 24-0 less than 12 minutes in). He's already scored 13 touchdowns this year. Weisman isn't likely to be drafted, but he'll get a long look in a training camp next summer as a short-yardage back in the poor-man's-Mike Alsott mode.

Iowa senior running back Mark Weisman rushed 25 times for 89 yards in Saturday's 45-29 win over Indiana on Saturday.

Weisman also scored two touchdowns in the victory. The Hawkeyes' 6-foot, 240-pound battering ram hasn't cracked even 90 yards this season, but he's already scored eight rushing touchdowns across six games. Weisman is versatile enough to have NFL chops, but he isn't quick or fast enough to project easily as an NFL back. He could slot in as a sort of poor man's Mike Alsott. Weisman has caught only seven passes over the last two years, which limits his projection.

Iowa senior running back Mark Weisman rushed 24 times for 74 yards in Iowa's 24-10 win over Purdue on Saturday.

Weisman also scored two touchdowns in the win. He's rushed for 184 yards this year. Weisman is a plodder and his long carry in the game only went for thirteen-yards. Despite his obvious drawbacks (3.2 yards/per carry on the season), Weisman's been serviceable in the Hawkeyes last two games, as he put up 88 yards against Pittsburgh and the 74 on Saturday. This marks back-to-back solid outings for Weisman. The 240-pound Weisman isn't particularly quick or fast, though, and projects as a late-round draft prospect, if he's drafted at all.

Iowa senior RB Mark Weisman rushed for 88 yards and a pair of scores on 22 carries in Saturday's 24-20 win over Pittsburgh.

Weisman didn't have a catch, and his long carry went for 19 yards, but he did what was asked of him, which was grind down the Panthers' defensive front. The 6-foot, 240-pound senior has led the Hawkeyes in rushing each of the past two seasons. "Built like a fullback, he rarely wins with make-you-miss quickness, but he does have the balance, power, and no-nonsense run style that allows him to rack up positive yardage," CBS Sports' Dane Brugler wrote over the summer.

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler appreciates Iowa senior RB Mark Weisman's fullback build and balance as a runner.

The Hawkeyes have lost so many running backs to attrition, injury, and suspension in recent years that their poor fortunate has become an internet meme. Weisman relieved Kirk Ferentz's headaches almost from the moment he stepped onto campus, a poor man's Mike Alstott who won't break into the open field, but also won't get stopped behind the line. "Built like a fullback, he rarely wins with make-you-miss quickness, but he does have the balance, power, and no-nonsense run style that allows him to rack up positive yardage, leading the Hawkeyes with 975 rushing yards in 2013," Brugler wrote.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said senior RB Mark Weisman could be used at fullback this upcoming season.

Iowa has nine RBs on scholarship, and the burly Weisman has already proved he is an exceptional blocker. But the 6-foot, 240-pound senior has led the Hawkeyes in rushing each of the past two seasons, so moving him would also deprive the squad of perhaps it's best runner. "There really hasn't been a discussion at this point," Ferentz said. "Mark Weisman has flexibility being a fullback and running back, but hopefully it's a good problem. Hopefully, it ends up being a crowded position, we'll see. I think it has the potential for that." Weisman has a far better chance of reaching the next level as a primary FB who can also handle the ball.

Iowa junior RB Mark Weisman will likely play against Ohio State this weekend after recovering from a foot injury.

Weisman sat out Iowa's game against Michigan State, and the Hawkeyes failed to generate anything positive on the ground. The junior's return should help, since he is average 104 yards per game.

Iowa sophomore RB Mark Weisman left Saturday's game against Northwestern with an apparent hip injury.

Weisman has missed time in recent weeks due to an ankle injury, but this appears unrelated. Damon Bullock started the game and will continue to take the majority of the carries.

The Iowa coaching staff is taking a wait-and-see approach with sophomore RB Mark Weisman and his availability for Saturday against Penn State.

The running back recently had an MRI on his sprained ankle but no red flags appeared, so Weisman did light work on Tuesday. Fellow sophomore Damon Bullock has already been ruled out for Saturday, so Iowa would be very weak, once again, at running back if Weisman cannot play.

Iowa's top runner, sophomore Mark Weisman, was not listed on the team's depth chart Monday.

Weisman suffered a right ankle injury that forced him out of Saturday's overtime win at Michigan State, so Iowa may go back to rotating oft-injured running backs week to week. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz has not made an official announcement on Weisman's status.
