Panthers selected Iowa State LB A.J. Klein with the No. 148 overall pick.
Klein (6-foot-1 1/4, 250) saw action at both strong- and weak-side linebacker as a three-year starter for the Cyclones. He tallied 20 career tackles for loss and tied an NCAA linebacker record with four pick-sixes. Klein ran 4.66 at the Combine and did 20 reps on the bench. Primarily a SAM 'backer with plus athleticism and thumping ability, Klein could be a poor man's Chad Greenway. He'll initially focus on special teams unless something goes wrong with Jon Beason's health, which has been known to happen. Sat, Apr 27, 2013 02:49:00 PM

Iowa State LB A.J. Klein suffered a "serious knee injury" while working out at the NFL Combine, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Klein stumbled in a coverage drill during workouts, but many initially thought it was only twisted ankle or another minor injury. His running mate, Jake Knott, missed a large portion of the season due to his own injury. Klein ran a 4.66 forty before going down.

Iowa State will face Tulsa in the Liberty bowl on December 31.

Neither team deploys a lot of NFL caliber talent. For Iowa State, A.J. Klein took over at weakside linebacker after fellow senior Jake Knott was sidelined with a shoulder injury. For Tulsa, sophomore receiver Keyarris Garrett is their best offensive option.

Iowa State senior A.J. Klein is still adjusting to his switch from SLB to WLB, a change that took place two weeks ago.

Klein explained that he is asked to run less, specifically in pass coverage. The position switch took place due to a season ending injury to fellow senior linebacker Jake Knott. The Cyclones defense is designed to allow the weakside linebacker to make plays.
