Cowboys selected Georgia Southern S J.J Wilcox with the No. 80 overall pick.
The Cowboys could have solidified their hole at safety in the first round, but reached for C Travis Frederick instead of Matt Elam. Now they settle for Wilcox, a 6-foot, 213-pounder that played tailback and slot receiver his first three seasons at Georgia Southern before converting to strong safety as a senior and intercepting two passes as a 13-game starter. He ran 4.57 at the Combine with a 35-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. Described as a "215-pound safety with corner feet" by NFL Network's Mike Mayock, Wilcox figures to open his career on special teams but could grow into a starter. Fri, Apr 26, 2013 09:41:00 PM

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Arizona Cardinals are high on Georgia Southern S J.J. Wilcox.

"Georgia Southern safety J.J. Wilcox was playing on the other side of the ball a year ago with no real draft hopes," La Canfora writes. "Now, he might not slip past Arizona at the top of the third-round (they are high on him), while Green Bay has done a lot of work on him as well, sources said. The Ravens and Cowboys need safeties and could jump on him in the second or third round, depending on how the opening picks go."

NFL Network's Mike Mayock believes Georgia Southern S J.J. Wilcox showed enough at this week's Senior Bowl that he may be viewed as a rookie starter by NFL teams.

"215-pound safety with corner feet," Mayock described. "I think he's an immediate starter in the NFL, he can help you on special teams. This is a guy that I've really enjoyed watching." A running back/slot receiver his first three seasons at Georgia Southern, Wilcox moved to strong safety as a senior and was a first-team all-league pick by the Southern Conference coaches. He also brings to the table kickoff return value.

Georgia Southern S J.J. Wilcox has been invited to the Senior Bowl.

Wilcox is an intriguing player since he only played full season at safety and impressed enough to earn this postseason all star invite. The senior has spent time as a slotback, receiver, and kick returner.
