Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn has dismissed senior S Demetruce McNeal following his arrest on a marijuana charge.

That was quick. McNeal was arrested early Saturday morning, and Malzahn informed the safety of his decision late that night. The senior had started 19 games over the last two seasons and was expected to play a pivotal role in the Tigers' defense this year. McNeal had been sidelined after undergoing surgery to fix an infection.

McNeal was not at practice on Saturday, and head coach Gus Malzahn said he is still gathering information on the situation. It was a second-degree possession charge. McNeal is recovering from a minor surgical procedure to fix an infection.

Auburn senior DB Demetruce McNeal is listed as day-to-day following an infection and subsequent surgical procedure.

AL.com previously reported McNeal's injury appeared to be to his leg. Coaches didn't seem too worried about the issue, so expect McNeal to be on the field when Auburn opens their season.

Auburn senior DB Demetruce McNeal was sidelined with an undisclosed injury for the team's first practice.

AL.com added it appeared to be a leg injury. "He’s got a medical issue he’s working through," head coach Gus Malzahn said. "It shouldn’t be much longer and we really expect him to make a full recovery." He was the team's leading tackler in 2012.

Auburn FS Demetruce McNeal returned to the team after sitting out practice for five games.

Coaches noted his absence was related to off-the-field issues. McNeal is Auburn's leading returning tackler after making 90 stops and tied for the team lead with seven tackles-for-loss. "He has been working through off-the-field issues," according to beat writer Joel A. Erickson.
