Michigan State QB coach Brad Salem says redshirt junior QB Damion Terry "needs to continue to grow."
Terry is competing with Tyler O'Connor for the starting job Connor Cook vacated. "He's grown miles in the last year in the management of the offense," Salem said. "Footwork is still raw at times, but physical ability, he has the arm strength." In 15 career games, Terry has 130 rushing yards (3.9 average) and has completed 14-of-26 passes for 103 yards. Terry is currently No. 2 behind Tyler O’Connor, but the open competition won't be decided for sure until this summer. Apr 18 - 5:20 PM

Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio confirmed sophomore QB Damion Terry suffered a torn left labrum (non-throwing) and underwent shoulder surgery.

"I expect him back by the first game," Dantonio said, though he didn't comment on Terry’s availability for summer camp starting in early August. Terry lost out to Connor Cook for the starting job last summer. Now, he'll have to fend off sophomore Tyler O’Connor for backup duties. The former four-star recruit was the No. 16 pro-style quarterback in the country coming out of high school in 2013.

Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio noted freshman QB Damion Terry has stood out.

ESPN's Joe Schad adds Dantonio has announced senior Andrew Maxwell is the starter, but the buzz continues to build for Terry. Beat writers this summer said it is "highly unlikely" Terry starts the opener, but Dantonio continues to say the best player will play at the quarterback position. The head coach wasn't shy in benching Maxwell last season for poor performance.

Michigan State beat writer Joe Rexrode believes it is "highly unlikely" that freshman QB Damion Terry starts the opening game for the Spartans.

Head coach Mark Dantonino previously stated the "best player" will start for the opener, but Rexrode isn't sold. "Just talked to Damion yesterday, actually, and while he is very motivated to compete for playing time this season, he also understands how far behind the others he is," Rexrode writes. "But I do think a role on the field is possible, utilizing his athleticism, and I don't think that's fabricated for motivation."

Michigan State freshman QB Damion Terry could push senior QB Andrew Maxwell for playing time this season.

"I think he's what we're evolving to a little bit quarterback-wise is guys who are a little bit more athletic or (have) ability to move in space, those kind of things," quarterbacks coach Brad Salem said. "I think he's a pretty special player." Maxwell certainly didn't show enough last season to secure the starting job moving forward.
