Toledo redshirt senior QB Phillip Ely was tremendous in the Rockets’ 32-17 win against Temple in the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday, earning a stellar +5.5 grade from PFF.
Ely went 20-for-28 with no turnovers, throwing for 285 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 6-of-10 passes 10 or more yards downfield, the flashiest of which was an 80-yarder to Cody Thompson. Toledo redshirt senior QB Phillip Ely's appeal for a sixth year of eligibility was denied by the NCAA.

Ely's collegiate career is officially over following Tuesday's night's 32-17 Marmot Boca Raton Bowl win over Temple. Ely signed with Alabama in 2011, redshirted his first year and transferred to Toledo in 2013. The signal caller thought he had a case to gain another year because his first season at Alabama was wrecked by a back injury.

Toledo redshirt senior QB Phillip Ely's eligibility is still a question for the upcoming season.

Ely transferred in from Alabama prior to last season, but tore his ACL in the second game and missed the remainder of the year. The NCAA has yet to rule on his sixth season, meaning Ely requested a redshirt season in 2014. Practice is only one week away and Ely is/was expected to start for Toledo.

Toledo redshirt senior QB Phillip Ely missed the school's spring game while still recovering from a torn ACL.

Ely missed the majority of action last year after suffering the injury in September following his transfer from Alabama. Ely also had minor surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. All indications point to Ely being healthy enough to open the 2015 season as the starter.

Ely took over the starting job this summer after transferring from Alabama and sitting out last year. Prior to the injury, Ely had a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio on a 60.3 completion percentage. The Rockets play Cincinnati with sophomore Logan Woodside starting at quarterback.

Former Alabama redshirt junior QB Phillip Ely has been named starter at Toledo.

Toledo head coach Matt Campbell confirmed the news on Monday morning. Ely beat out sophomore Logan Woodside and redshirt freshman Michael Julian for the opportunity to start the opener against New Hampshire. Woodside was T.O. Owens’ backup last season, completing 21-of-41 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown. Woodside and Ely were co-No. 1s heading into spring practice. Ely played behind AJ McCarron at Alabama and bolted last May for the Rockets.

Alabama backup redshirt sophomore QB Phillip Ely is expected to transfer to Toledo.

Ely tweeted the following: "Ready to make a change in my life for the better and I thank everyone who has supported me through this process. Go Rockets!" Ely had been running as the Crimson Tide's third string quarterback, with Blake Sims backing up A.J. McCarron. The redshirt sophomore will have to sit out the 2013 season, but will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after that.
