Texans selected UCLA G/T Xavier Su'a-Filo with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Su'a-Filo (6-foot-4, 307) started at left tackle as an 18-year-old true freshman for the Bruins, before taking a two-year Mormon mission. He returned to make 27 more starts, 21 at left guard and six at left tackle. In 2013, Su'a-Filo earned the Morris Trophy as the top lineman in the Pac 12. An adequate athlete (5.04 forty, 25-inch vertical) with better arm length (33 3/8") for guard than tackle, Su'a-Filo projects as a pro-ready pass protector with quick feet and nastiness to his game, but he needs to get stronger in the upper body to become a drive-blocking force. He'll likely start at left guard immediately in Houston, opposite RG Brandon Brooks with Duane Brown and Derek Newton at the tackles, and Chris Myers at center. May 9 - 7:15 PM

UCLA OG Xavier Su'a-Filo moved to No. 1 in NFL Media draft analyst Mike Mayock's newest position rankings.

Mayock had stood strong behind Stanford's David Yankey as the top guard until today, despite the fact that most had tabbed Su'a-Filo as the class' best OG awhile ago. Su'a-Filo will almost certainly be the first OG taken, either at the end of the first round or the beginning of the second. Yankey drops to No. 2 in Mayock's ranks, followed in order by Trai Turner (LSU), Gabe Jackson (Mississippi State), and Chris Watt (Notre Dame).

UCLA's Xavier Su'a-Filo is the best pure OG in the draft, according to NFL.com's Charles Davis.

The analyst is a little miffed that Su'a-Filo isn't getting more first-round buzz at the moment. "Some people have told me they think he's a third-rounder," Davis wrote. "I like him a lot, though. Outside of Zack Martin, who could play guard or tackle at the next level, I think Su'a-Filo is the best guard in the draft." Bruins' coach Jim Mora said last month that scouts told him that Su'a-Filo was the "best guard prospect since All-Pro Steve Hutchinson."

UCLA OG Xavier Su'a-Filo ran the forty in 4.97 and 5.07 seconds at the school's pro day event.

Bruins' coach Jim Mora said that scouts have told him that Su'a-Filo is the "best guard prospect since All-Pro Steve Hutchinson" came out in the 2001 draft. At the exhibition for scouts, Su'a-Filo added a 26-inch vertical and 8-7 broad jump, did the short shuttle in 4.46 seconds and the three-cone in 7.93 seconds, and lifted 26 reps on the bench press. Su'a-Filo's 5.04 second forty in Indy was the second-fastest amongst guards.

Orange County Register's Ryan Kartje reports that two scouts told head coach Jim Mora that UCLA OG Xavier Su'a-Filo is the "best guard prospect since All-Pro Steve Hutchinson."

"Two scouts told Mora that Su’a-Filo is the best guard prospect in the draft since five-time All-Pro Steve Hutchinson, who was drafted out of Michigan in 2001," Kartje wrote. The Steve Hutchinson comparison could be a little bit of a stretch, but Su’a-Filo's stock has risen over the last couple of months. His experience at guard and tackle, paired with his athleticism and speed has impressed scouts. He has a chance to go in the end of the first round or perhaps the second round of the draft.

UCLA OG Xavier Su'a-Filo ran the second fastest 40-yard dash time (5.04 seconds) amongst OGs at the NFL combine.

He wasn't done there. Su'a-Filo led all OG prospects in the 20-yard shuttle, perhaps the drill most indicative of on-field OL explosiveness. The former Bruins' stalwart's impressive day had evaluators salivating. "This kid Su'a-Filo is an impressive specimen. He could go in the first round. He won't get out of the second round," said NFL Network's Mike Mayock. SI.com's Doug Farrar tweeted that he now prefers Su'a-Filo to David Yankey and compared the UCLA product to Josh Sitton.

NFL.com's Gil Brandt believes UCLA OG Xavier Su'a-Filo will be the next combine breakout star.

"This year, the player who I believe will make the biggest jump is UCLA OG Xavier Su'a-Filo," Brandt writes. Last year, Brandt predicted that EJ Manuel and Cordarrelle Patterson's stock would rise after the combine. Most teams have assigned Su'a-Filo a second day grade, and Brandt believes Su'a-Filo's "athleticism and speed" will be enough to move him up in the first round of the draft.

NFLDraftScout.com's Dane Brugler slotted UCLA G Xavier Su'a-Filo's to the Seahawks with the last pick in the first round in his mock draft.

Su'a-Filo declared for the draft early, perhaps because he just turned 23 (he went on a mission in college). He's beginning to see a stock jump as evaluators come away impressed from his tape. Scouts Inc.'s Kevin Weidl, for instance, wrote last week that he loved Su'a-Filo's balance. "The starting offensive guards in Seattle have produced inconsistent results," wrote Brugler of his pick. "Su'a-Filo has experience at tackle and guard, but projects best inside and will be the top guard in this class for several teams."

Scouts Inc.'s Kevin Weidl has been impressed with UCLA G Xavier Su'a-Filo's balance.

"Can count on one hand how many times UCLA OG Su'a-Filo was on the ground through three tapes," Weidl tweeted. "Agile and plays with excellent balance." Weidl adds the guard class is much like the wide receiver class, in that the non-seniors bolster the crop. Su'a-Filo has a real chance of being the top interior lineman selected in May.
Feb 1 - 12:03 PM

Draft insider Tony Pauline didn't assign a first-round grade to any interior lineman.

UCLA G Xavier Su'a-Filo, an early entrant into the draft, received a second-round grade along with fellow early enrollee David Yankey of Stanford. Mississippi State's Gabe Jackson was given a 2-3 round grade, while Alabama's Anthony Steen and Baylor's Cyril Richardson were ranked third-round talents. Su'a-Filo, 23, played left tackle as a freshman and then took a few years off due to a mission.
Jan 30 - 5:42 PM

UCLA junior G Xavier Su'a-Filo has declared for the NFL draft.

Su'a-Filo turns 23 this month, which likely played into his decision. He played left tackle as a freshman then took a few years off due to a mission. He returned and alternated between tackle and guard. His home is on the inside.
Jan 4 - 5:15 PM

UCLA junior G Xavier Su'a-Filo will request an evaluation from the NFL Draft Advisory Board.

We expect Su'a-Filo to declare, especially after he cited his age as a reason why he will test draft waters. The large offensive lineman turns 23 in January. His most natural position is guard, but Su'a-Filo has been forced to fill in a left tackle from time to time.

UCLA appears ready to start junior G Xavir Su'a-Filo at LT versus Oregon.

Freshman Scott Qussenberry will start at left guard, meaning at least three freshmen offensive linemen will see extended action against a talented Oregon defense. Bruin coaches said moving Su'a-Filo back to tackle from his natural guard position was a "last resort," but with Simon Goines' injury UCLA has no choice.

NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah believes UCLA junior Xavier Su'a-Filo is the best Bruin OL in a long time.

"He's quick, agile and nasty," Jeremiah tweeted. "Excellent on pulls and pass pro." Su'a-Filo is only a junior despite being older than many in his class because he went on a Mormon mission for two seasons prior to 2012. He started all 14 games at left guard last year after starting 13 games at left tackle in 2009.
