Former Georgia sophomore S Tray Matthews transferred to Auburn.
Matthews, booted off the Bulldogs earlier this month following a March arrest for his involvement in a failed stipend checks scam, will sit out this coming season. He started six games and collected 36 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble as a freshman in Athens. The No. 10 safety prospect in the 2013 recruiting class also considered Louisville, where former Bulldogs' S Josh Harvey-Clemons and CB Shaq Wiggins previously transferred. Jun 14 - 8:58 PM

Former Georgia sophomore S Tray Matthews is considering Auburn and Louisville.

The Bulldogs booted Matthews off the team on Wednesday following a March arrest for his involvement in a failed scam involving stipend checks. The No. 10 S prospect in the 2013 class suffered from a nagging hamstring injury last season and played in just eight games, starting six. Matthews could join former Bulldog S Josh Harvey-Clemons and CB Shaq Wiggins with the Cardinals.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Georgia head coach Mark Richt has announced that they have released sophomore S Tray Matthews.

"We are trying to make room for guys who want to do things right," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. Unfortunately Matthews, defensive linemen Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach and wide receiver Uriah LeMay were arrested in March after a failed scam involving stipend checks. The four are scheduled to be arraigned in Athens on the charges on Thursday. Auburn or Louisville could be Tray Matthews' next potential landing spot.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt addressed the recent arrest of four players -- including safety Tray Matthews -- on Tuesday.

Matthews, defensive linemen Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach and wide receiver Uriah LeMay were arrested after a failed scam involving stipend checks. "At Georgia, we’ve never tried to hide things," Richt said. "If somebody makes a mistake, we clean it up. We don’t hide it. In due time, everyone’s going to know what’s going to happen because of it. Some things when it comes to discipline are very public and some things aren’t. I’m not sure exactly where this is going to fall. If there’s something that we need to let everybody know, we’ll let y’all know." Richt insinuated that game suspensions or even possibly dismissals were not out of the question.

Four Georgia players, including sophomore-to-be S Tray Matthews, were arrested and charged with theft by deception.

Defensive linemen Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach and wide receiver Uriah LeMay were the other three players arrested. The peculiar part of this story is the football players stole from the UGA Athletic Association, to the tune of 11 student tuition checks for a total of $786.50. "Matthews, Taylor and DeLoach are alleged to have electronically deposited the checks through a mobile banking app into three different Wells Fargo accounts and then cashed the same paper check at an unknown local convenience store with an account at SunTrust bank," beat writer Marc Weiszer writes. Georgia will begin spring practice on Tuesday.

Georgia freshman FS Tray Matthews is expected to play against Florida.

A hamstring injury has kept Matthews off the field since the LSU game. He and sophomore starting safety Josh Harvey-Clemons have only been on the field together for three games.

Georgia freshman FS Tray Matthews (hamstring) returned to practice on Monday.

Matthews has missed three straight games with a hamstring injury he sustained in practice earlier this month. Fellow safety Josh Harvey-Clemons, who injured his foot against Vanderbilt, ran on the side Monday, but he still appears to be favoring his bum wheel.

Georgia will be without starting freshman FS Tray Matthews against Tennessee.

Matthews suffered a hamstring injury during practice this week. The Bulldogs young defense certainly takes a hit with his absence, but sophomore safety Josh Harvey-Clemons has looked great since returning from suspension. Despite the loss, we expect Georgia to have no issue with Tennessee.

ESPN's Kipp Adams singled out true freshman S Tray Matthews as Georgia's possible breakout player this season.

Matthews' "decision to enroll early was a wise one as he was the talk of spring practice," Adams writes. "Matthews has the talent and pretty much has locked up the free safety spot heading into fall practice, but it will be his ability to quickly pick up the different coverage packages that will seal his fate as a difference-maker this season." This is the same spot that launched Bacarri Rambo into the national spotlight, so Matthews could see the same result.
