Texas A&M senior QB Matt Joeckel will transfer, leaving the starting QB race down to Kenny Hill and Kyle Allen.
The brother of Jaguars OT Matt graduated in December and will be eligible to play immediately, wherever he winds up. "I have loved my 4 1/2 years at Texas A&M," Matt Joeckel said. "I am glad I had the opportunity to play for Coach Sumlin, Coach [Jake] Spavital and the rest of the coaches. I am proud to have my degree from the Mays Business School and I'll always consider myself a member of the Aggie family." Meanwhile, Hill and Allen will now square off to become Johnny Manziel's heir. Hill has more experience, but he was arrested for public intoxication and suspended indefinitely last month. Allen is the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the land. Whoever wins the gig is likely to put up big numbers. Apr 16 - 4:17 PM

Date:

Texas A&M will start junior QB Matt Joeckel, not freshman Kenny Hill, against Rice, according to GigEm247.

This is fairly surprising, since beat writers noted Hill saw the majority of second team reps in the last week. Joeckel, the twin brother of No. 2 overall pick Luke, was listed as the backup throughout the summer. Johnny Manziel will take over at halftime, but we expect the Aggies' to be up on the scoreboard by then thanks to a strong running game.

Of Johnny Manziel's backups, Texas A&M junior Matt Joeckel has attempted the most career college passes with 11.

In other words, the Aggies will be in a world of trouble if the NCAA suspends Manziel for accepting payments in exchange for autographed memorabilia. Luke's twin brother Matt ascended to No. 2 on the depth chart when Jameill Showers transferred to UTEP in February. The Aggies open the season against Rice in less than four weeks. They square off with Alabama in less than six weeks.

Texas A&M junior Matt Joeckel, Luke's twin brother, was listed as the Aggies' No. 2 QB in the spring.

Jameill Showers, who was listed ahead of Johnny Manziel prior to this season, transferred earlier this offseason. Joeckel obviously has NFL pedigree but has only appeared in five games during his time at Texas A&M, completing 5-of-11 attempts for 42 yards. Needless to say there would be a drop off, mainly in styles, if Manziel were to miss an extended period of time.
