Texas head coach Charlie Strong said junior QB Tyrone Swoopes would start the season opener in South Bend against Notre Dame if it were today.
"If we had to go play Notre Dame today, it would be Tyrone," Strong said. Swoopes has never relinquished the No. 1 spot and we'd be a bit surprised if it happened over the next few weeks. Keep in mind, however, that Strong expects to play both Swoopes and Jerod Heard in the opener against the Irish, regardless of who begins the game. Aug 22 - 10:38 PM

TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline believes that Texas junior QB Tyrone Swoopes "is a tremendous athlete with a next level arm."

"I love his patience in the pocket as he’s by no means a run first signal caller. I also feel he makes solid decisions," Pauline wrote. The Texas QB struggled behind a line that failed to keep him upright in 2014. Last season, Swoopes threw for 2409 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while completing 58.3 percent of his passes. Pauline believes that Swoopes "must really turn the corner in 2015 and improve the nuances of his game if scouts are to fully move into his camp."

Texas' QB rotation of redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard and presumed starting junior Tyrone Swoopes will continue beyond the opening game against Notre Dame.

The news comes from quarterback coach Shawn Watson, who says the rotation will remain during Texas' non-conference games. After the opener against Notre Dame. Texas plays Rice and Cal before their first conference showdown against Oklahoma State. We were not impressed with Swoopes' play last season.

Texas HC Charlie Strong has already stated he will use two quarterbacks in the season opener against Notre Dame.

Those two quarterbacks are redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard and presumed starting junior Tyrone Swoopes. The latter was not impressive in his time as the starter in 2014. We think the old saying applies: If you have two quarterbacks, you don't have one.

Texas HC Charlie Strong named junior QB Tyrone Swoopes first-string quarterback entering fall practice.

"When you walk out there, somebody's got to be in charge," Strong said. "So Swoopes will be in charge because he's played a lot." In other words, redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard will be given a fair opportunity to win the job during two-a-days. "I'm just saying, we walk out there on the 7th and somebody's got to take those snaps," Strong said. "[Swoopes will] walk out there. With Jerrod, we'll see by Notre Dame if he can go get the position." Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley's son Kai, an ESPN 300 athlete, is also on the periphery of the mix. "The thing about him is, he has enough moxie about him that he may think he is the guy," Strong said. "But there's nothing wrong with that."

Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes completed 20 of 34 attempts for 200 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in the school's 48-10 loss to TCU.

Swoopes is just not there yet as a complete quarterback, but with a full offseason as the school's starter he might get there. That could be said for a number of Texas players, and year two under Charlie Strong will be an interesting case study.

Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes "clearly has a ways to go as a passer," according to Pro Football Focus.

The site graded Swoops out with an ugly -2.9 game score for his work in Texas' 23-0 loss to Kansas State on Saturday. "He had three interceptions dropped and just three completions targeted over 10 yards down the field,"the PFF Analysis Team observed. "To his credit, though, late in the first quarter his best throw of the day was caught out of bounds by Jaxon Shipley who couldn’t quite time his steps correctly." Overall, Swoopes completed 13-of-25 attempts for 106 yards in Texas' first shutout since 2004.

Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes completed 13 of 25 attempts for 106 yards int he school's 23-0 loss to Kansas State.

It was Texas' first time being shutout since 2004. The offense really struggled in this one, only converting 4 of 13 3rd downs. Obviously Texas has taken multiple steps back in recent years as a program, and Charlie Strong has taken the stance of getting worse (by dismissing bad program fits) before getting better. The school needs to win three of their next four to be bowl eligible.

NFL Media Analyst notes that Tyrone Swoopes is an "erratic passer still mastering the nuances of the passing game."

"Swoopes, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound sophomore, is a talented athlete with exceptional size and running skills, but he's an erratic passer still mastering the nuances of the passing game," Brooks wrote. In the second start of his career, Swoopes will face a UCLA defense that scored three defensive touchdowns in their opener. Brooks notes that UCLA "features a host of athletic defenders along the front line."

NFL Media Analyst Bucky Brooks notes that it's "a cause of concern" for Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes, without three starters who are responsible for protecting him.

"Whenever an offensive line loses three starters in a week, it is a cause of concern, particularly when the front line is responsible for protecting a young quarterback (Tyrone Swoopes) poised to make his first collegiate start," Brooks wrote. The young Longhorns prospect will be without lineman Kennedy Estelle, Desmond Harrison and Dominic Espinosa, who will all be sidelined this week. Brooks adds that, "it could be a rough night for the Longhorns against an experienced BYU defense that brings tremendous pressure at the point of attack."

Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes will make his first start against BYU.

"I'm very confident in Tyrone. I am," head coach Charlie Strong said. "I'm confident with any player on this football team." Swoopes was very much a reserve last year, totaling five completions on 13 attempts while taking two sacks. He added 79 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Texas HC Charlie Strong told reporters sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes "is the clear No. 2 quarterback."

David Ash is entrenched as the starter, but as we've seen there is no lock for him to play in every game. Swoopes only played in five games last season and completed five of 13 attempts for 26 yards, adding 79 rushing yards and a touchdown. He could grab the starting job in 2015.

Texas freshman QB Tyrone Swoopes could play against Kansas State if junior David Ash is held out, according to head coach Bob Stoops.

Junior Case McCoy earned the start last week against Ole Miss, but Longhorn fans have been itching to see Swoopes. The freshman looked solid in the school's spring game, and Mack Brown might not have the luxury of redshirting him. Swoopes did log more carries (118) than pass completions (81) as a high school senior.

Texas freshman QB Tyrone Swoopes has been limited in practice by a sore hamstring, according to Longhorns coach Mack Brown.

Swoopes looked great in the spring game, but Texas has the depth at quarterback to redshirt him, if they so desire. With David Ash entrenched as starter and Case McCoy the ostensible No. 2, Swoopes, a four-star athlete in the Class of 2013, is in a battle with Connor Brewer and Jalen Overstreet for third-string duties. Swoopes, who logged more carries (118) than pass completions (81) as a high school senior, will need more time with new quarterbacks coach Major Applewhite before Brown will feel comfortable handing over the keys to the offense. If the 6-foot-4, 245 pounder plays in 2013, it will be in sub-packages which utilize his unique blend of size and speed.
