Texas senior QB Tyrone Swoopes scored the game-winning touchdown in Sunday's 50-47 double-overtime win against Notre Dame.
In a weekend that saw multiple teams bungle their quarterback situations by switching their players in-and-out seemingly at random, the Longhorns' duo of Shane Buechele and Tyrone Swoopes actually looked seamless in their transitions, with Swoopes staying in his lane and attempting just one pass (it was not completed) while rushing 13 times for 53 yards and three touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 243-pounder is worth a speculative flier on the assumption that he will continue to see work around the goal line. As a passer, though, look elsewhere. Sep 5 - 12:06 AM

Texas coach Charlie Strong said his quarterback competition is "wide open."

Monday marked the Longhorns' first spring practice, with senior QB Tyrone Swoopes a slight early favorite for the starting job over soph Jerrod Heard and true freshman Shane Buechele. "It'll be enough reps where we'll know fairly quickly who the guy will be," Strong said. "I think you'll be able to see it." Strong indicated that redshirt freshmen Kai Locksley and Matthew Merrick will also be even fair looks as the team transitions to a new, Baylor-style, up-tempo offense under former Tulsa OC Sterlin Gilbert. "Sterlin, whoever he's comfortable with, he'll be able to know that right away," Strong said. "We'll give the guys enough reps to where he'll be able to place them in that position. Then he can just say, 'Hey, this is the guy we've got to go with.'"

Texas junior QB Tyrone Swoopes threw for 151 yards and a score and ran for another touchdown in Saturday's 23-17 win over Baylor.

He finished 12-for-19 and chipped in 52 rushing yards in his first start since the opener. Despite the upset win, the Longhorns finish 5-7 -- their second consecutive losing campaign -- and will miss bowl season. "We have something to build on that we can take into the offseason," HC Charlie Strong said. "Not pleased with the year we had. You look at it, you go beat Oklahoma, you bounce back and go on the road and go beat Baylor. I don't have an answer for this team. I wish I did. I wish every week could have been like this."

Texas junior QB Tyrone Swoopes only completed 3 of 11 passes five or more yards down the field.

No wonder head coach Charlie Strong said "We’re going to take our time... and evaluate everything in this program... Start all over again," on Monday. Swoopes is not good but remains atop the school's depth chart. Overall, Swoopes completed 7 of 22 attempts for 93 yards and took two sacks. Texas faces Rice next, which could be a more difficult game than expected.

Texas junior QB Tyrone Swoopes "will develop into a top rated quarterback prospect for the next level," TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline defiantly states.

This is increasingly becoming the minority opinion. Swoopes has struggled throughout his career and went 7-for-22 for 93 yards in Notre Dame's 38-3 shellacking of the Horns on Saturday. "In all honesty despite his great physical skills the Longhorn passer does make a fair number of mistakes," Pauline added.

Notre Dame HC Brian Kelly said that "[Notre Dame's defense has to] prepare for [a new Texas offense] and the potential for two quarterbacks."

"We have no film other than a grainy ESPN Longhorn Network game from the spring. That’s not much to go on," said Kelly, who added that he fully expects the Longhorn offense to look different this season. Texas HC Charlie Strong played it down, noting that "they know what we have at quarterback and they know some of the returning players that we have coming back. I don’t think we can surprise them at all." Strong named junior Tyrone Swoopes the starting quarterback earlier on Monday. A season ago, the 6-foot-4, 243-pound junior completed fewer than 60-percent of his passes while averaging a paltry 6.27 YPA.

Texas head coach Charlie Strong named junior Tyrone Swoopes the school's starting QB.

Strong indicated as much one week ago, but added Jerrod Heard will also play. Swoopes was not impressive last season. Perhaps there were moments, but overall Swoopes did not elevate the team with his play. A 13:11 touchdown to interception ratio, less than 60 completion percentage and a 6.27 yards per attempt tells part of the story. The pressure could grow a bit more in the second year under Charlie Strong, but the feeling is the head coach is building something positive and patience is necessary.

Texas head coach Charlie Strong said junior QB Tyrone Swoopes would start the season opener in South Bend against Notre Dame if it were today.

"If we had to go play Notre Dame today, it would be Tyrone," Strong said. Swoopes has never relinquished the No. 1 spot and we'd be a bit surprised if it happened over the next few weeks. Keep in mind, however, that Strong expects to play both Swoopes and Jerod Heard in the opener against the Irish, regardless of who begins the game.

TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline believes that Texas junior QB Tyrone Swoopes "is a tremendous athlete with a next level arm."

"I love his patience in the pocket as he’s by no means a run first signal caller. I also feel he makes solid decisions," Pauline wrote. The Texas QB struggled behind a line that failed to keep him upright in 2014. Last season, Swoopes threw for 2409 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while completing 58.3 percent of his passes. Pauline believes that Swoopes "must really turn the corner in 2015 and improve the nuances of his game if scouts are to fully move into his camp."

Texas' QB rotation of redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard and presumed starting junior Tyrone Swoopes will continue beyond the opening game against Notre Dame.

The news comes from quarterback coach Shawn Watson, who says the rotation will remain during Texas' non-conference games. After the opener against Notre Dame. Texas plays Rice and Cal before their first conference showdown against Oklahoma State. We were not impressed with Swoopes' play last season.

Texas HC Charlie Strong has already stated he will use two quarterbacks in the season opener against Notre Dame.

Those two quarterbacks are redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard and presumed starting junior Tyrone Swoopes. The latter was not impressive in his time as the starter in 2014. We think the old saying applies: If you have two quarterbacks, you don't have one.

Texas HC Charlie Strong named junior QB Tyrone Swoopes first-string quarterback entering fall practice.

"When you walk out there, somebody's got to be in charge," Strong said. "So Swoopes will be in charge because he's played a lot." In other words, redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard will be given a fair opportunity to win the job during two-a-days. "I'm just saying, we walk out there on the 7th and somebody's got to take those snaps," Strong said. "[Swoopes will] walk out there. With Jerrod, we'll see by Notre Dame if he can go get the position." Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley's son Kai, an ESPN 300 athlete, is also on the periphery of the mix. "The thing about him is, he has enough moxie about him that he may think he is the guy," Strong said. "But there's nothing wrong with that."

Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes completed 20 of 34 attempts for 200 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in the school's 48-10 loss to TCU.

Swoopes is just not there yet as a complete quarterback, but with a full offseason as the school's starter he might get there. That could be said for a number of Texas players, and year two under Charlie Strong will be an interesting case study.

Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes "clearly has a ways to go as a passer," according to Pro Football Focus.

The site graded Swoops out with an ugly -2.9 game score for his work in Texas' 23-0 loss to Kansas State on Saturday. "He had three interceptions dropped and just three completions targeted over 10 yards down the field,"the PFF Analysis Team observed. "To his credit, though, late in the first quarter his best throw of the day was caught out of bounds by Jaxon Shipley who couldn’t quite time his steps correctly." Overall, Swoopes completed 13-of-25 attempts for 106 yards in Texas' first shutout since 2004.

Texas sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes completed 13 of 25 attempts for 106 yards int he school's 23-0 loss to Kansas State.

It was Texas' first time being shutout since 2004. The offense really struggled in this one, only converting 4 of 13 3rd downs. Obviously Texas has taken multiple steps back in recent years as a program, and Charlie Strong has taken the stance of getting worse (by dismissing bad program fits) before getting better. The school needs to win three of their next four to be bowl eligible.
