Southern Methodist QB Matt Davis attended the local prospect workouts of both the Cowboys and Texans.
After tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in September (and missing the rest of the season), Davis declared for the NFL Draft rather than seeking a sixth year of eligibility. He's a smallish dual-threat quarterback who lacks NFL arm talent. Though he's unlikely to be drafted, he'll likely be in a camp this summer. Apr 11 - 2:41 PM

SMU redshirt senior QB Matt Davis (knee) declared for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Davis' 2016 season was lost when he tore his ACL in the opener. He'd been seeking a sixth year of NCAA eligibility via a medical waiver, but will instead begin his professional career. "(Davis is a) Greg Ward-type playmaker; he can make plays with his arm and feet. Like Ward, NFL scouts will have questions about his size and ability to move an NFL-style offense from the pocket," said NFL.com analyst Chad Reuter. As was the case for Iowa DE Drew Ott last year, the timing of Davis' decision means he missed the NFL Combine. Davis will audition for NFL scouts at the Mustangs' pro day on March 29. We aren't optimistic about his odds of getting drafted.

The NCAA has not yet ruled on SMU redshirt senior QB Matt Davis' (knee) request for a sixth year of eligibility via a medical waiver.

Davis tore his ACL in the opener this past season, knocking him out for the remainder of the campaign. Typically, that's an open-and-shut case for a medical hardship waiver, but one never does know with the NCAA. In 2015, his last healthy season, Davis threw for 2,263 yards, rushed for 761 more and accounted for 26 total touchdowns. If Davis is granted the waiver, he'll compete for the starting job with sophomore Ben Hicks and Arkansas transfer Rafe Peavey.

SMU redshirt junior QB Matt Davis will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, one he seemingly suffered against North Texas.

It is a torn ACL. Davis did not warm up ahead of last weekend's loss to Baylor and he will apply for a medical redshirt, allowing him an extra season at SMU. Redshirt freshman Ben Hicks should take over as the team's starter. Davis is a dual-threat type who can hurt defenses with his arm and his feet.

SMU redshirt junior QB Matt Davis (knee) didn't take snaps in warmups prior to Saturday's game against Baylor.

It certainly seems as though Davis is going miss this one. If that's the case, heralded but inexperienced prospect QB Ben Hicks will start.

TCU HC Gary Patterson said that SMU redshirt junior QB Matt Davis reminds him of Trevone Boykin in his ability to run.

"You’ve got to worry about [Davis] scrambling," said Patterson. "The hardest thing is to get on him when he goes back to pass. That’s where he’s hurt a lot of people. Big sprintout, then took off and ran last week for about a 50- or 60-yard touchdown. He creates problems." The 6-foot-2, 202-pound redshirt junior has been sharp through two games, completing 70.2% of his passes (33-of-47) while throwing for 347 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. He's also rushed for 240 yards and two scores.

SMU redshirt junior QB Matt Davis, a Texas A&M transfer, completed 16 of 23 attempts fr 122 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the school's 56-21 loss to Baylor.

Davis rushed for 115 yards on 24 carries. He and new head coach Chad Morris fit each other's styles very well. Davis has plenty of escapability and playmaking skills in the open field. The first half was better than the second, but daily fantasy players will likely be paying attention to Davis moving forward.

SMU redshirt junior QB Matt Davis "appears to have the edge" on the starting job.

Davis started the final five games last season and finished the year with 855 passing yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions on a 54 completion percentage. He added another four rushing touchdowns. Davis, a former Texas A&M transfer, is holding off three-star recruit Ben Hicks.

Former Texas A&M redshirt sophomore QB Matt Davis transferred to SMU.

Davis was ranked as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the country as a four-star member of the Aggies’ 2012 recruiting class. He redshirted his first year on campus and then transferred to the JUCO ranks last year. SMU believes Davis will be eligible to play immediately in 2014, meaning he'll be eligible to play three years for the Mustangs. SMU is looking for a replacement for Garrett Gilbert.

Texas A&M redshirt freshman QB Matt Davis has decided to transfer.

Davis redshirted his first season on campus. The timing might be confusing, since Johnny Manziel's season is somewhat in question, but this is the time of year many quarterbacks change locations if they are not satisfied with their standing with the team. Davis is expected to move to the JUCO level. Matt Joeckel and Kenny Hill are competing for the No. 2 job.
