Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore OT Jonathan McLaughlin will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing ankle surgery.
McLaughlin injured his left ankle against Boston College on November 1. The sophomore had started all 23 career games in which he had played. Head Coach Frank Beamer said, ""We are where we are...Your level of experience is where it is. And that’s just being realistic." Virginia Tech's been hit by a rash of injuries this season and are currently out their starting running back (Shai McKenzie) and a starting defensive tackle (Luther Maddy). They'll go with Division III transfer Wade Hansen in McLaughlin's spot against Duke on Saturday. Nov 11 - 4:36 PM

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore OT Jonathan McLaughlin "looks like a solid future prospect," wrote TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline.

"It seems Virginia Tech has hit a speed bump as I predict no early round selections for the foreseeable future," Pauline said as a preface. McLaughlin spent one season at a prep school before Frank Beamer handed him the starting LT gig last year. "McLaughlin looks like a solid future prospect," Pauline wrote. "Sized well, he shows both athleticism and strength at the tackle spot."

Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer has named true freshman Jonathan McLaughlin the school's starting LT.

McLaughlin will be the first true freshman to start a season opener on VT's offensive line since Sergio Render in 2006, according to beat writer Andy Bitter. McLaughlin will also be the first true freshman ever under Beamer to start season opener at either tackle spot. The Hokies open with Alabama who struggled to generate a consistent pass rush last season, but we expect Nick Saban to attack the young offensive lineman.
