Kansas State junior QB Jake Waters will play in Saturday's Medal of Honor Bowl.

Waters was a strong collegiate quarterback, but he's going to be in for a real fight to make an NFL roster as a UDFA. He completed 66-percent of his passes this season with a 22/7 TD/INT ratio, but doesn't come with pro measurables. Over the summer, Waters was compared to ex-Gamecock Connor Shaw by CBS Sports' Dane Brugler, a comparison which we think is pretty accurate.
Jan 6 - 2:38 PM

Kansas State junior QB Jake Waters completed 20-of-37 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday.

The 37 pass attempts were three shy of his season-high, which came against Auburn. Waters had the volume going, though not the efficiency, as he completed just 54.1% of his throws. Prior to Saturday, he had only had one game in 2014 in which he completed less than 60% of his passes. Waters has made strides this season in improving his accuracy, but games like the one against TCU show the limits of Waters' ability to put up production beyond a game-manager capacity. Over the summer, he was compared to ex-Gamecock Connor Shaw by CBS Sports' Dane Brugler, a comparison which we think is pretty accurate.

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler noted that Kansas State junior QB Jake Waters had "gained the attention and respect" of NFL scouts.

Brugler wrote that Waters had "show[ed] improved passing skills and toughness this season." The stats seem to bear this out, as Waters has raised his completion percentage from 61.2% in 2013 to 65.2% in 2014. Waters has also seen his yards-per-completion drop from 9.5 to 8.4 over the last year, though, indicating the possibility that he's completing more passes because the game-plan has been simplified for the quarterback. As a draft prospect, he's on the fringe. A big game against TCU on Saturday would do well to give scouts a little more to work with.

Kansas State junior QB Jake Waters threw for 224 yards in Kansas State's 23-0 romp over Texas on Saturday.

He was 19-for-30. Waters is a fringe prospect who isn't likely to get drafted after next season, though he'll definitely get a camp invite. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that he could surprise and carve out a short career as a backup. CBS Sports' Dane Brugler compared Waters to ex-Gamecocks QB Connor Shaw over the summer: "Similar to Connor Shaw a year ago, Waters' skill-set doesn't scream NFL quarterback, but with a productive and winning senior season, he will earn a shot to make a pro roster."

Kansas State junior QB Jake Waters threw for 208 yards and ran the ball for a touchdown in Kansas State's 58-28 romp over Texas El-Palso.

Waters was efficient in this one, completing 10-of-15 passes in Saturday's blowout win over UTEP. Waters had a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 44-yard touchdown pass to Zach Trujila in the third. This season Waters has rushed for 184 yards on 48 attempts this season and passed for 916 yards, completing 61.6% of his passes. He is undersized for the position, but if he puts a big season, he might able to catch on with an NFL club.

Kansas State junior QB Jake Waters "has a chance to showcase his diverse skills" on Thursday night against Auburn, wrote Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans.

"Waters is the classic Bill Snyder recruit -- and undervalued junior college star that few other high-profile schools wanted," wrote SI's Inside Read duo. "As so often happens under Snyder, he’s emerged as a star." KSU would take a big step towards the inaugural college football playoff if it can pull off an upset against the Tigers. "We have everything," Waters said. "We can go do the spread game, the zone reads, throw the attachments, or we can go put two tight ends, two running backs in there and pound it on the ground. It’s a complicated offense." CBS Sports' Dane Brugler compared Waters to ex-Gamecocks QB Connor Shaw over the summer: "Similar to Connor Shaw a year ago, Waters' skill-set doesn't scream NFL quarterback, but with a productive and winning senior season, he will earn a shot to make a pro roster."

Kansas State junior QB Jake Waters compares to ex-Gamecocks QB Connor Shaw, according to CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.

"Similar to Connor Shaw a year ago, Waters' skill-set doesn't scream NFL quarterback, but with a productive and winning senior season, he will earn a shot to make a pro roster," Brugler wrote. Like Shaw, Waters lacks ideal height and size for the next level. The Kansas State prospect is a versatile athlete and a tough competitor who can come up big in clutch moments. Waters enters the 2014 season with the top career passing efficiency rating (156.8)in school history and ranks fifth in passing yards per game (189.9).
