Chiefs selected Rice CB Phillip Gaines with the No. 87 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
Gaines (6-foot 3/8, 193) was a 40-game starter for the Owls, tallying a school-record 38 career pass breakups with 13 tackles for loss and four interceptions. He was a first-team All C-USA pick as both a junior and senior by the conference's coaches. In 2013, Gaines was targeted 40 times in the passing game, allowing just 13 receptions (32.5% completion rate). Gaines' stock soared when he ran 4.38 at the Combine with a 10-foot-2 broad jump and 36 1/2-inch vertical. Based on sheer athleticism and size, Gaines has upside to grow into a borderline No. 1 NFL cornerback. There have been rumors the Chiefs are looking to move on from Brandon Flowers, so Gaines could see some playing time early. May 9 - 10:46 PM

He's a favorite of both NFL.com's Charles Davis, who calls Gaines a top CB sleeper, and NFL Films' guru Greg Cosell. Gaines posted an official 4.38 forty at the NFL Combine, tying TCU's Jason Verrett for the second fastest CB time behind Oklahoma State's Justin Gilbert. The 6-foot 1/4 and 193 pounder allowed only 13 completions on 40 targets in 2013.

Rice's Phillip Gaines ranks as Charles Davis' top CB sleeper.

"Gaines was a star of the combine, putting up numbers comparable to those of Oklahoma State Justin Gilbert, who is considered the top corner in the draft," wrote Davis. "Gaines has good length, and has some strong believers. His defensive coordinator at Rice told me if he played at Alabama, we'd be talking about him as a first-round pick." Gaines (6-foot 1/4 and 193 pounds) tied TCU's Jason Verrett for the second fastest CB time (4.38) behind Gilbert. He also posted a 10-foot-2 broad jump, a 36 1/2-inch vertical, and 11 bench reps. A back-to-back first-team, All C-USA performer, Gaines allowed only 13 completions on 40 targets in 2013.
