Cal junior WR Chris Harper will forego his last season of eligibility and declare for the NFL draft.
It's a surprising decision, as Harper could have helped himself by spending one more season in Cal's pass-happy offense. He posted 52 receptions, six receiving touchdowns, and 634 receiving yards this year. "After having many talks with my family, mentors and coaches I have decided that declaring for the NFL Draft was best for me at this time," Harper stated. "Millions of different thoughts and prayers have been put into this educated decision which is why I have decided to enter the draft." A scout "familiar with the program" called Harper a "poor man's DeSean Jackson" over the summer. Harper has a wiry (5-foot-11, 170 pounds) frame and great agility, though he is not as fast (4.53 forty) nor skilled as Jackson. Jan 7 - 3:36 PM

A scout "familiar with the program" calls Cal junior WR Chris Harper a "poor man's DeSean Jackson."

Like Jackson, Harper has a wiry (5-foot-11, 170 pounds) frame and great agility. He isn't as fast (4.53 forty) or as vocal, having flown under the radar in two seasons on campus. "[Sonny] Dykes' scheme spotlights Harper, allowing the diminutive receiver to gain easy releases out of the slot and getting the ball into his hands in the open field where his elusiveness, vision and burst make him most dangerous," wrote CBS Sports' Rob Rang. "His light feet and balance make him a very efficient route-runner and he possesses soft hands, though size limitations are a obvious concern when projecting him to the next level." Harper posted 70 receptions for a team-leading 852 yards and five touchdowns last season. He's a good bet to top those numbers in 2014, making Harper a Pac-12 wideout to remember during summer fantasy drafts.

Cal sophomore WR Chris Harper is expected to play on Saturday in the season opener against Northwestern despite suffering a shoulder injury on Tuesday.

"We expect him to play Saturday," head coach Sonny Dykes said. "He basically sprained his shoulder." Harper registered 41 receptions last season, accounting for 544 receiving yards and two touchdowns opposite Keenan Allen. The sophomore is expected to be the team's leading receiver.
