The Tar Heels' "bandit" linebacker began the season on the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, but ended it in disappointment after suffering through a hamstring injury for most of the year. UNC senior "bandit" LB Norkeithus Otis will play in Saturday's Medal of Honor Bowl.

This is a player in need of a strong postseason. Otis was on the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list to begin the year, but suffered through a hamstring injury for most of the campaign. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound linebacker was graded as a possible sixth or seventh round pick prior to the 2014 season by TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline, but the analyst wrote in November that Otis was a disappointment this season.

UNC senior "bandit" LB Norkeithus Otis has been a disappointment this season, according to TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline.

Pauline had Otis marked as a possible sixth or seventh round pick prior to the 2014 season. "To date we’ve both been disappointed," writes Pauline. "Otis lines up as a bandit back in the Tar Heel formation to take advantage of his athleticism and pass rushing skill but has posted 26 tackles and 3 sacks this season." Pauline acknowledges that Otis was dealing with injuries at the start of the season and that they may have been a factor when trying to figure the senior's inconsistencies.

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline thinks UNC senior "bandit" Norkeithus Otis projects to the NFL as a linebacker.

Otis has played a lot of defensive line for the Tar Heels, but Pauline sees him as a 'backer. "I do like Norkeithus Otis, a college defensive end who’ll get consideration at outside linebacker in the NFL," Pauline wrote. "Otis is relatively athletic and makes plays in pursuit as well as up the field." Otis in a unique prospect who did a little bit of everything last year, collecting 49 tackles -- 13 for loss -- 7.5 sacks, nine quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, three pass breakups and an interception. Otis' skill set will be desired in the spring because the NFL desires faster linebackers to drop into coverage in this pass-happy era. Pauline currently sees him as a Rds. 6-7 prospect.

UNC senior "bandit" LB Norkeithus Otis has "the talent to potentially fill" a "tweener" hybrid role in the NFL, according to CBS Sports' Derek Stephens.

Otis did a little bit of everything last year, collecting 49 tackles -- 13 for loss -- 7.5 sacks, nine quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, three pass breakups and an interception. "Although he can be plugged in at multiple spots, it's Otis's natural ability as a pass-rusher that may be his greatest asset, as he demonstrates an explosive first step, active hands, agile feet to change direction and impressive closing burst once he's in the clear," Stephens wrote. "Despite being only 6'1, Otis's long arms enable him to play taller and with more range than one would expect when considering his listed size, and he understands how to employ his shorter stature to gain leverage when engaging taller opponents." Since the NFL desires faster linebackers to drop into coverage in a pass-happy era, Otis' skill set will be desired next spring.

UNC junior "bandit" LB Norkeithus Otis made two tackles for loss, including one sack, and two hits on the quarterback against South Carolina.

Otis' role is as a versatile linebacker and defensive back hybrid, working at multiple levels of the defense. He was very decisive in his reads last night, making a home in the backfield and the line of scrimmage. Otis has weakside linebacker size, but he is a prospect to keep an eye on.
