Giants signed Virginia Tech TE Ryan Malleck.
Malleck (6'5/247) made 32 starts for Virginia Tech, totaling 62 career catches for 658 yards (10.6 YPR) and four touchdowns. A passable athlete for his size, Malleck runs 4.81 with a 34 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-1 broad jump. Although he needs to continue adding strength, Malleck is a quality in-line blocker with growth potential as a possession receiving threat. May 1 - 1:26 AM

Virgina Tech TE Ryan Malleck is "not big enough to be a 'Y' (blocking TE) and not really fast or a threat as a receiver," an NFL scout said.

"He knows how to find holes but he's not going to beat anybody worth a damn in man coverage," the scout told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "If he makes it you're looking to do better." A second scout was more generous with Malleck, who existed in the shadows of Bucky Hodges the past few years: "He's a good player because he does everything right. He's not flashy. He's steady."

The East-West Shrine Game added Virginia Tech senior TE Ryan Malleck to the roster.

Malleck played in the shadow of Bucky Hodges over the past few years, recording 44 catches total in 24 starts over the past two years. He's huge -- 6-foot-5, 253 pounds -- and will likely have to prove his worth as a blocker to hang in the NFL.

Virginia Tech junior TE Ryan Malleck suffered a labral tear in his left shoulder last week in practice and will miss the upcoming season.

The Hokie coaching staff is confident that the team's starting tight end will be a key contributor next season as a redshirt junior. Because Malleck was a true junior, he'll be designated a redshirt this year and enter 2014 with his two seasons of eligibility intact. Malleck caught 17 balls for 174 yards last season; no other Virginia Tech tight end has caught a collegiate pass. Redshirt junior TE Duan Perez-Means is expected to start against the Crimson Tide on Saturday.
