Pitt HC Pat Narduzzi insinuated that both redshirt senior QB Max Browne and sophomore QB Ben DiNucci could see the field against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
Browne was benched for DiNucci in the first half of Saturday's blowout loss to Oklahoma State. DiNucci then went on to complete 13-of-25 passes for 228 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. While those aren't particularly impressive numbers, Browne has shown next-to-no spark as a starter, either at USC or Pitt. Our guess is that Narduzzi will eventually side with DiNucci as the season draws ever-onward. Pitt should be looking toward the future right now, a future which grad transfer Browne will not be part of. For the time being, at least, the situation has not been settled. Sep 20 - 10:01 PM

NFL Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline believes that Max Browne's stock took a hit after his poor performance against Oklahoma State on Saturday.

"When Browne got the call in 2016 he failed miserably, was replaced by Sam Darnold and eventually transferred to Pittsburgh. It’s déjà vu all over again as he was benched during Saturday’s debacle against Oklahoma State after the inability to move the Panthers offense, Pauline said. "Browne just couldn’t make the passes, missed wide open receivers and had senior Jester Weah wide open in the deep field waiting for a touchdown pass that never landed near him." Quarterback Ben Dinucci replaced the struggling Browne in the first half.

Pitt redshirt senior QB Max Browne was removed for sophomore QB Ben Dinucci in the first half of Saturday's game against Oklahoma State.

With the Panthers struggling to move the ball again as they fell behind the Cowboys 35-0 in the second quarter, Pitt's coaching staff inserted Ben Dinucci. The Pitt offense responded by scoring a pair of touchdowns. Browne's job is very much in danger.

Pittsburgh HC Pat Narduzzi says he'll stick with redshirt senior QB Max Browne at quarterback.

Narduzzi isn't even using the "OR" depth chart gimmick with Browne and sophomore Ben DiNucci here. Instead, he's making it clear that Browne is the undisputed starter with Oklahoma State traveling to Heinz Field this weekend. Browne was awful in in Saturday's 33-14 loss to Penn State, completing 19-of-32 passes for 138 yards and two interceptions. Narduzzi deflected blame on Monday. "I was pretty happy after watching the tape with him more than I was maybe after the game, and I wasn't disappointed after the game at all because I told you how I felt after the game," Narduzzi said. "You know, so does he have room for improvement? Yes. And so do I."

Sep 12 - 2:54 PM

Pitt redshirt senior QB Max Browne completed 19-of-32 passes for 138 yards and two interceptions in Saturday's 33-14 loss to Penn State.

Browne figures to have a little bit more leash on the starting job, but he has not impressed beyond the ability to connect on short completions during the first two games of his Pitt career. The USC transfer has thrown for just 278 yards with a 1/2 TD/INT ratio in those two contests. Redshirt sophomore Ben DiNucci would be the man to replace Browne if the Panthers tire of his watching-paint-dry game.
Sep 9 - 7:14 PM

Pitt named redshirt senior QB Max Browne the starter for the coming season.

Browne beat out redshirt sophomore Ben DiNucci for starting honors. This marks the second consecutive preseason camp in which he has been named starter -- he beat out Sam Darnold at USC last August, too, before a lackluster start to the season forced HC Clay Helton's hand and led to Darnold's ascension and Browne's eventual transfer. In eight games (including three starts) with the Trojans a year ago, the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder threw for 507 yards with a 2/2 TD/INT ratio.

Pitt OC Shawn Watson said that redshirt senior QB Max Browne has been "very assured in his decision-making."

"He doesn’t make a lot of pass decision errors, run decision errors or, really, management errors," Watson said, later adding that Browne is "really sound that way and he should be. He had a lot of experience and been trained by a lot of really good coaches." The 6-foot-5, 215-pound redshirt senior has been taking the bulk of first-team reps in preseason camp over redshirt sophomore Ben DiNucci. Browne, a former blue-chip recruit, struggled in his three starts with USC last season before transferring over to Pitt during the offseason.
Aug 18 - 2:30 PM

Pitt redshirt senior QB Max Browne completed 13-of-28 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown in the team's spring game.

"I felt like we started off just kind of bleh. Just kind of no one making a play, myself included," Browne said of his spring game showing. He liked how the offense came together as the game progressed. The USC transfer is battling it out with redshirt sophomore QB Ben DiNucci for starting honors. HC Pat Narduzzi indicated that one of those two young men was beginning to pull away in the competition at the end of spring practice, though he did not divulge which one. August camp figures to settle this score.
May 9 - 8:56 PM

Pitt OC Shawn Watson said that redshirt senior QB Max Browne and redshirt sophomore QB Ben DiNucci have pulled away from the competition in spring practice.

Browne -- who transferred from USC to Pitt in December -- and DiNucci have been fighting it out with redshirt freshman QB Thomas MacVittie and true freshman QB Kenny Pickett this spring. Their experience is starting to show, with Watson saying that "[b]oth [Browne and DiNucci] have really upped the ante the last week." Browne is looking to redeem himself after winning the Trojans' starting gig in August of 2016 only to find himself benched for Sam Darnold after three games due to extreme ineffectiveness.
Apr 4 - 7:45 PM

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne will transfer to Pittsburgh.

Browne won the starting job at USC out of August camp, but the former five-star recruit proved woefully ineffective in his three starts with the Trojans. Playing against Alabama, Utah State and Stanford to open the season, the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder failed to throw for 200 yards in any one of those contests and managed just a 2/2 TD/INT ratio in that space. Sam Darnold was subsequently installed as starter and the rest, as they say, is history. Browne ranked as 247Sports' composite's No. 1 pro-style quarterback during the 2013 cycle. With Pitt, he will compete for starting honors in 2017, as current quarterback starter Nathan Peterman is set for graduation.

Transferring USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne will visit Pittsburgh this weekend.

We like the fit. The Panthers prefer pro-style quarterbacks and will have an opening under center next year following Nathan Peterman's graduation. Browne was the nation's No. 1 pro-style passer in 2013, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Last week, Browne announced that he won't stay with the Trojans through their bowl game. Instead, he's turned his attention to the transfer process, which became inevitable after he lost his job to Sam Darnold after three games. A graduate transfer, Browne is eligible to play immediately wherever he winds up.

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne has left the program.

Browne is going to begin looking at transfer options and will not compete in USC's yet-to-be-determined bowl contest. He infamously opened the season as the Trojans' starter, but proved terribly ineffective in his three starts. HC Clay Helton and crew then switched to redshirt freshman Sam Darnold, who has led USC on a monumental second-half run. The Trojans are currently rolling on an eight-game winning streak, erasing the bitter taste of that 1-3 start. As a graduate transfer, Browne will be eligible to play next year regardless of which school he ultimately lands at.

Former USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne has been given permission to talk to other programs about a possible transfer.

Browne will be eligible to play immediately for whatever school he chooses in 2017 since he has already completed his undergraduate degree. Browne was named the starter to open the season, but poor play shifted the job over to redshirt freshman Sam Darnold.

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne was meditative regarding his brief starting experience with the Trojans.

Browne started the first three games of the season, but was subsequently benched in favor of Sam Darnold. He is still haunted by his missed opportunities, telling the Los Angeles Daily News, "I want to play. I had an opportunity to. I wish it had worked out better. I don’t know. I’ll just leave it at that." A transfer is likely here, particularly given that the 6-foot-5, 215-pound redshirt junior has already earned his degree from USC and will not have to sit out a year in the transfer process. HC Clay Helton indicated that he would have a conversation with Browne about the future come the end of the season. "It’s kind of the world I live in," said the former five-star recruit.

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne indicated that a transfer is probable after the close of the 2016 season.

USC HC Clay Helton named Sam Darnold the starter for Friday's game against Utah after three mostly ineffective games from Browne. Outside of a fine (if unspectacular) 182-yard, two-touchdown, one-interception performance against Utah State in Week 2, Browne threw for just 292 combined yards and no touchdowns in blowout losses to Alabama and Stanford. The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder was a five-star recruit out of high school and he should see his fair share of Power 5 love if he does, indeed, opt to move on as a graduate transfer at the end of the season.
