USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne has left the program.
Browne is going to begin looking at transfer options and will not compete in USC's yet-to-be-determined bowl contest. He infamously opened the season as the Trojans' starter, but proved terribly ineffective in his three starts. HC Clay Helton and crew then switched to redshirt freshman Sam Darnold, who has led USC on a monumental second-half run. The Trojans are currently rolling on an eight-game winning streak, erasing the bitter taste of that 1-3 start. As a graduate transfer, Browne will be eligible to play next year regardless of which school he ultimately lands at. Dec 1 - 6:46 PM

Former USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne has been given permission to talk to other programs about a possible transfer.

Browne will be eligible to play immediately for whatever school he chooses in 2017 since he has already completed his undergraduate degree. Browne was named the starter to open the season, but poor play shifted the job over to redshirt freshman Sam Darnold.

Nov 2 - 9:59 AM

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne was meditative regarding his brief starting experience with the Trojans.

Browne started the first three games of the season, but was subsequently benched in favor of Sam Darnold. He is still haunted by his missed opportunities, telling the Los Angeles Daily News, "I want to play. I had an opportunity to. I wish it had worked out better. I don’t know. I’ll just leave it at that." A transfer is likely here, particularly given that the 6-foot-5, 215-pound redshirt junior has already earned his degree from USC and will not have to sit out a year in the transfer process. HC Clay Helton indicated that he would have a conversation with Browne about the future come the end of the season. "It’s kind of the world I live in," said the former five-star recruit.
Oct 13 - 2:47 PM

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne indicated that a transfer is probable after the close of the 2016 season.

USC HC Clay Helton named Sam Darnold the starter for Friday's game against Utah after three mostly ineffective games from Browne. Outside of a fine (if unspectacular) 182-yard, two-touchdown, one-interception performance against Utah State in Week 2, Browne threw for just 292 combined yards and no touchdowns in blowout losses to Alabama and Stanford. The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder was a five-star recruit out of high school and he should see his fair share of Power 5 love if he does, indeed, opt to move on as a graduate transfer at the end of the season.
Sep 20 - 2:34 PM

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne completed 23-of-30 passes for 182 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Saturday's 45-7 win over Utah State.

Both of Browne's touchdowns were of the shorter species, as he hit JuJu Smith-Schuster for a three-yard score to open the game's scoring and later found Steven Mitchell Jr. for a two-yarder with 40 seconds remaining in the first half. While the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder did take the majority of snaps at quarterback, Sam Darnold also fired off a pair of scoring passes in more limited action (he completed 5-of-7 passes) and the threat of a time-share (even a lopsided time-share) makes Browne more of an upside flier for fantasy purposes, rather than a must-add on the waiver wire. We expect the former five-star recruit to improve statistically as he settles into the offense. A road showdown with Stanford shows next on USC's schedule.
Sep 10 - 5:49 PM

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne completed 14-of-29 passes for 101 yards and an interception in Saturday's loss to Alabama.

This one was easy enough to see coming. Browne had never made a collegiate start before Saturday and Alabama is Alabama. The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder has far more upside than he showed in the defeat. The former five-star recruit will try for better results against Utah State next weekend.
Sep 4 - 12:06 AM

USC HC Clay Helton named redshirt junior QB Max Browne the starter for the coming season.

Browne was challenged and then some by redshirt freshman QB Sam Darnold throughout the spring and summer, but ultimately pulled away to win the starting job. And boy howdy, will he have a spotlight on him in Week 1. The Trojans open against Alabama on September 3 in what could be a spectacularly fun contest. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Browne has had to patiently wait for his chance behind Cody Kessler, but the upside here is off the charts. The former five-star recruit ranked as Rivals' No. 7 overall prospect for 2013. Now that he has been named the starter, he makes for an intriguing mid-to-late round selection for fantasy purposes, as USC's offense is loaded to the gills with talent.

Aug 20 - 6:46 PM

USC HC Clay Helton indicated that he would name the team's starting quarterback on August 20.

This is essentially what Helton said at Pac-12 media days, too. Nothing has changed in the interim in the competition between redshirt junior QB Max Browne and redshirt freshman QB Sam Darnold. Following the opening of August camp, Helton said, "Today, both of them played well. I thought that they made good decisions. Just like it was in the spring, both are playing at a very high level." Coming out of the spring, Browne held a slight edge in the competition.

Aug 5 - 1:41 PM

USC HC Clay Helton said that he would name a starter between redshirt junior QB Max Browne and redshirt freshman QB Sam Darnold after 18 practices in August.

This will give Helton and company two weeks to prepare for their season-opening Armageddon with Alabama, set to kick off on September 3. While he has been keeping his cards relatively close to the vest on this one, Helton did offer one nugget of potential clarification when he noted that Browne would have won the starting job out of spring practice if the season had started up in May. Darnold performed well enough in the spring to at least temporarily stall Browne's ascension to the starting gig for 2016. For all the world, though, this looks like Browne's job to lose. The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder was a five-star recruit out of high school and ranked as Rivals' No. 7 overall prospect (No. 1 pro-style QB) for the 2013 cycle.

Jul 14 - 2:43 PM

USC redshirt junior QB Max Browne said, "I’m given the keys to the car and I’ve gotta drive the car fast."

"It’s exciting with all the receivers we have, the tight ends and just the team in general, I’m just excited to lead these guys," Browne said. Read in a vacuum, you would never know that he is currently embroiled in a tight competition with redshirt freshman QB Sam Darnold to actually take over the wheel for Browns-bound QB Cody Kessler. ESPN's Travis Haney wrote earlier this offseason that the coaches like Darnold's poise and athleticism. Haney also floated the possibility that both Browne and Darnold could play against Alabama in the season-opener.

Jun 4 - 5:24 PM

ESPN's Travis Haney wrote that "the gap [in the USC quarterback competition] is not all that wide" between redshirt junior QB Max Browne and redshirt freshman QB Sam Darnold.

Browne has the edge in experience, but HC Clay Helton might be just a little smitten with Darnold. "Trojans coaches like his poise, even though he turns just 19 next month. They also like his athleticism," Haney wrote. The analyst went on to note that we could potentially see both quarterbacks against Alabama in Week 1, believing that that "might provide USC’s best option, especially given [Alabama's] excellent pass rush."
May 19 - 8:57 PM

USC HC Clay Helton indicated that he would like to name a starting quarterback at the end of spring practice "if there is a huge gap."

Redshirt junior QB Max Browne and redshirt freshman QB Sam Darnold are considered to be the two gunslingers truly in this conversation. In December, QB coach Marques Tuiasosopo said, "They're different in their own rights." The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Browne should be considered the tentative front-runner to win the starting job in 2016. He was backup to Cody Kessler last season and the No. 2 quarterback prospect in the country out of high school for the 2013 recruiting cycle.
Mar 8 - 9:46 PM

USC sophomore QB Max Browne went through extra drills after practice as he prepares for the role of backup to starter Cody Kessler.

Said Browne, "The past few days, the ball was getting away from me and I haven't been capitalizing on some plays." Hence, the work after practice. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound junior should be relegated mostly to clipboard duty this season, but he will likely battle it out with freshman Sam Darnold for the starting gig come 2016, after Cody Kessler's flown from the nest.

USC head coach Lane Kiffin "ideally" wants to redshirt freshman QB Max Browne this season.

This statement was necessary to make, since Cody Kessler and Max Wittek have started the season flat. Kiffin added Browne has a "great future" ahead of him, but Trojan fans likely don't want to wait. USC faces Boston College this week.
