Buccaneers selected Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2016 draft
Hargreaves (5'11/204) started 37 games in three seasons for the Gators, piling up 10 career interceptions and first-team All-SEC honors in his sophomore and junior years. Supremely young for a rookie, Hargreaves won't be of legal drinking age until June. Although Hargreaves ran a slightly underwhelming 4.50 forty in Indy, he showed explosion in the vertical (39") and broad (10'10") jumps before shining in agility tests. Possessing an elite combination of quicks, competitiveness, and ball skills, Hargreaves offers No. 1-cornerback potential. Apr 28 - 9:38 PM

An NFL scout told NJ.com's Mark Eckel that Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves "very smart, very instinctive, a (Cleveland Browns All-Pro) Joe Haden-type player."

"Gets his hands on a lot of balls," the scout said. "Very physical in the run game. He's a real competitor." Hargreaves' stature may knock him down the board a bit, but most anonymous scouts have been enthused about his prospects during this pre-draft process. "He's a very good player. He's a tough press corner," another scout told Eckel. "He has good feet, good instincts. He's smart. He might just need to get in the weight room a little bit. But he's ready to play at this level."

Per Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, some in the Dolphins' scouting department and front office think Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves is "undersized" and "a nickel back."

"Miami’s preference is a big, physical boundary corner," Jackson wrote. He went on to imply the organization is higher on Houston’s William Jackson and Ohio State’s Eli Apple -- both tall corners who the Dolphins -- than Hargreaves. Jackson (the reporter, Barry, not the corner) went on to say the Dolphins will consider trading down from No. 13 overall to draft a corner later if they don't like the value in that slot. Miami won't necesarily take a corner. While Hargreaves may not be their cup of tea, we know Miami likes Ezekiel Elliott and a series of defensive players, Clemson defensive ends Kevin Dodd (visited) and Shaq Lawson being two examples.

Rotoworld's Evan Silva identifies corner as Philadelphia's biggest draft need and Josh Norris slots them Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves at No. 8.

Silva goes as far as to say the Eagles "need to find a day-one starting cornerback in the draft." We love Eric Rowe's potential, but the Eagles only have this mashup to compliment him at this point: Nolan Carroll (broken fibula), Ron Brooks and Leodis McKelvin. Hargreaves would fit in well across from Rowe, even if he wouldn't be the most popular pick as fans dream about netting stud offensive prospects like Carson Wentz and Zeke Elliott.

Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves is visiting the Jaguars on Tuesday and will visit the Bucs later this week.

Both Florida teams would love to keep Hargreaves home if the value works out later this month. Because of Hargreaves' size, he's a somewhat divisive prospect. Some see a surefire top-10 talent, others wouldn't take him until Day 2. A scout speaking recently with NJ.com is in the former camp, calling Hargreaves the best corner prospect in the class.

NJ.com's Mark Eckel spoke with one NFL scout who believes Florida's Vernon Hargreaves is the best CB prospect in the 2016 NFL Draft.

"He's not as athletic as Ramsey, but he's a smoother cover guy than Ramsey," the scout says. We have seen others, not the scout, question Hargreaves' athleticism due to a 4.50 forty at the NFL Combine. That is utterly ridiculous, as Hargreaves is one of the most athletic prospects in this class, regardless of position. In 2015, Hargreaves allowed a handful of big plays downfield. Don't let those few plays cloud the overall evaluation and talent Hargreaves offers. He could be a top 10 selection.

Pro Football Focus analyst John Breitenbach wrote that Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves' "regression as a junior is a concern."

While perusing the PFF archives over your morning Wheaties, nobody would blame you for dropping the spoon when you saw Hargreaves listed by Breitenbach as one of the biggest boom-or-bust prospects in this draft class. The Florida corner has drawn little criticism to this point. In regards to the junior-season drop-off, Breitenbach noted that by PFF's grading metrics, the 5-foot-10, 207-pounder ranked second nationally in coverage. He proceeded to fall all the way off to 71st in the same metric this past season. "Hargreaves appeared to abandon his responsibility on occasion in favor of personal statistics," the analyst wrote. That bothers him, though he isn't bothered by the corner's diminished size (calling it the least of his concerns), noting that "[a]lthough he doesn’t always display physicality in press coverage, and when shedding blocks in the screen game, Hargreaves is capable of challenging receivers at the catch point despite his short stature."

NFL Draft Scout's Frank Cooney noted that Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves has "insanely quick feet and the ability to be explosive closing a gap or soaring for the football."

"Hargreaves has dazzling, blink-quick footwork that is effective in both press and off coverage," Cooney wrote, "where he also displays remarkable peripheral vision and instinct." He ranks the 5-foot-10, 207-pound Florida product as the best corner prospect in this draft class. While an AFC executive voiced concern over Hargreaves' relatively pedestrian speed (4.50 seconds in the 40-yard dash) and size earlier in March, multiple insiders view him as a slicker pure corner prospect than in-state buddy Jalen Ramsey. "His natural talent is so impressive that NFL teams should ignore concerns about Hargreaves' short and slim stature. Just draft him and sic him on opposing receivers," Cooney concluded.

Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves indicated that the two teams that showed him the most interest during Tuesday's Pro Day were the Dolphins and 49ers.

After Pro Day proceedings were over and done with, Hargreaves said, "It was smooth. It was good. It was fun to be back out there with the boys." The 5-foot-10, 207-pounder indicated that he's planning on losing a few pounds off that Pro Day measurement to reach his ideal weight. He also boasted that he's the best corner prospect in the draft, saying, "Without a doubt. Without a doubt, every time. I'm always going to pick me." NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt believes that his strong work in positional drills on Tuesday might have locked him in as a top-10 selection.
Mar 22 - 5:50 PM

NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt believes that with Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves strong Pro Day performance on Tuesday, he might have secured a selection within the draft's first 10 picks.

Brandt noted that Hargreaves put on an "outstanding" show in positional drills. Per the analyst, "He has everything you look for in a corner, quickness and cover skills. I think he just cemented his top-10 status in the 2016 NFL Draft." The 5-foot-10, 207-pounder (Pro Day measurement) has meetings set up with the Cowboys, Jags, Bucs and Ravens over the coming weeks. In his most recent mock draft, Rotoworld analyst Josh Norris pegs Hargreaves to the Eagles with the No. 8 pick.

Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves will take visits with the Cowboys, Jaguars, Buccaneers and Ravens.

In addition to those four squads, Hargreaves will also be meeting with an additional (unknown) quartet in the weeks ahead. The four listed teams all hold top-10 picks and could use corner help. To that point, Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has already indicated that he hopes Dallas selects FSU DB Jalen Ramsey with the fourth overall pick. An NFL scout speaking with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel last month believes the 5-foot-10, 204-pound Hargreaves is actually a better pure corner than Ramsey, though, calling him a "smoother cover guy" than the Seminole standout. NFL Media's Lance Zierlein has previously compared the former Gator to Browns CB Joe Haden.

An AFC personnel executive indicated that Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves' stature might preclude his team from taking him with a premium pick.

"He's a good football player," the exec said. "I like him, but he's not tall and he has average speed. It's pretty rare to see cornerbacks who don't have great size and speed get taken early. If we were looking for a cornerback with a top-10 pick, I don't know if our GM would be willing to take him that early." As NFL Media's Lance Zierlein points out, Hargreaves' most popular comp is Joe Haden, who shares athletic and size similarities. Haden went No. 7 in the 2010 draft and is a two-time Pro Bowler.

An NFL scout says Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves is the best corner in the class.

That's including Jalen Ramsey as a corner, by the way. "He's a smoother cover guy than Ramsey," the scout said. In 37 career games, Hargreaves posted 10 interceptions. "Very smart, very instinctive," another scout said. "Joe Haden-type player. Gets his hands on a lot of balls. Very physical in the run game. Competitor. Only thing he lacks is Jalen's size." Despite Hargreaves's lackluster 4.5 forty at the Combine, ESPN's Todd McShay still believes he's a top-10 prospect. And a quick word about Hargreaves's forty time: Pay it little mind. Outside of size and speed, he dominated basically every other Combine drill.

Despite Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves's lackluster forty showing at the Combine, ESPN's Todd McShay still believes he's a top-10 talent

The analyst pointed to Hargreaves' broad jump (10-foot-10) and vertical jump (39 inches) in praising his exceptional lower half power for a diminutive prospect (5-foot-10, 204 pounds). "While I saw a little tightness in his hips during drills, Hargreaves' excellent ball skills and exceptional foot quickness were on display for talent evaluators on Monday," he wrote. "The best pure cover corner in this class, Hargreaves has the quickness and fluidity to play man-to-man coverage at the next level. Even though his 40 time doesn't line up, I still think Hargreaves is worthy of a top-10 pick."

NFL Media draft expert Mike Mayock believes Florida CB Vernon Hargeaves III could be a great fit with the in-state Dolphins.

"He can create and change a direction, can play press, can play off. If he went eighth to Miami, I think it would be a heck of a pick. He's that good," Mayock said. Hargreaves would obviously fill a need for Miami. Opinions differ on whether he's worth the slot Miami currently sits in. Rotoworld's Josh Norris ranks Hargreaves No. 17 overall, Scouts Inc. ranks him No. 4 overall and NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein compares Hargreaves to Joe Haden and ranks him No. 9.
