Steelers signed Florida State OLB Matthew Thomas.
Thomas (6’3/232) made 27 career starts for the Seminoles, tallying 20 tackles for loss with three sacks and one forced fumble. An enigmatic underachiever at FSU, Thomas reminded of his five-star recruit athleticism by registering 95th-percentile SPARQ results at the Combine, then blazing a 4.44 forty at the FSU Pro Day. Thomas is purely a height-weight-speed prospect whose shortage of college production and shaky off-field history are significant concerns. May 3 - 11:49 AM

Following Tuesday's practice at the East-West Shrine Game, a veteran scout from the Giants met with FSU LB Matthew Thomas.

Thomas (6'4/227) was a standout performer during the Tuesday practice session, with 247Sports' Brendan Sonnone passing along that the Florida State linebacker was "frequently in the backfield," including one sequence where he recorded back-to-back tackles for loss in 11-on-11 drills. While he possesses the athleticism and speed that will pique interest from the NFL, Walter Football's Charlie Campbell notes that questions about his instincts and awareness will likely prevent him from a Day 2 selection this spring.

Thomas missed a good chunk of preseason camp due to an academic issue before returning to the team earlier this week. Fisher is not concerned with the lack of practice, saying, "He’s never out of condition. He’s one of those guys who can be out for three weeks, three months, goes out and out-runs everybody." While he feels confident that Thomas is physically ready for the rigors of the season, Fisher would not commit to starting the linebacker in Saturday's big showdown with the Crimson Tide.
