Vanderbilt senior DT Nifae Lealao is being counted on to improve the Commodores' abysmal defensive havoc stats, according to ESPN's Alex Scarborough.
In 2016, Vanderbilt finished last in the SEC in sacks and among the worst nationally in TFL. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound nose guard Lealao might be the team's best shot to improve upon those numbers. Last year, he displayed the "size and strength to punish in the running game" and the "quickness to fight off blocks and disrupt the quarterback," wrote Scarborough. "If he develops into one of the best interior linemen in the SEC as coach Derek Mason expects, it would be a huge boost to a struggling defense." Jun 29 - 1:54 PM

Nifae Lealao, a four-star defensive tackle in the class of 2014, committed to Stanford last week.

Lealao is a 6-foot-6, 280-pound behemoth with surprising quickness. He explodes off the snap but has a bad habit of playing tall instead of bending his knees and driving back offensive lineman. He'll need to work on his pass rushing at the next level, specifically lowering his pad level and more effectively using his hands to separate quickly from blockers. Lealao's problems are all fixable through instruction, and he picked an ideal coaching staff in that regard.
