Maryland WR Deon Long ran disappointing forties of 4.67 seconds (against the wind) and 4.58 seconds (with the wind) at his pro day workout.
Long "struggled in catching the ball later in drills and had a number of drops," Tony Pauline added. The prospect's good week at the East-West Shrine Classic should ensure a draft pick, though we can report analysts essentially haven't discussed Stefon Diggs' former running mate since then. Maryland senior WR Deon Long caught four passes for 29 yards in Saturday's East-West Shrine Classic.

Long had been drawing rave reviews all week for his work in practice, with both NFL Media analyst Charles Davis and TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline saying that he might have been the most impressive wide receiver they saw over the last week. In 2014, the 6-foot, 185-pound Long caught 51 passes for 575 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers aren't exactly eye-popping, but as a prospect, Long is quick off the catch and has shown an ability to haul in contested balls. It will be interesting to see how Long grades out individually now that he's no longer playing second-fiddle to teammate Stefon Diggs.

NFL Media analyst Charles Davis wrote that Maryland senior WR Deon Long "might have been the best wide receiver I saw [at East-West Shrine game practices]."

"He's very good out of his breaks and showed some toughness in his route running," Davis wrote. "He made a lot of contested catches, and certainly doesn't lack any confidence." Long haw drawn rave reviews from analysts on-hand in Florida this week. TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline wrote earlier this week that Long looked "like the best receiver" at Shrine practices, and CBS Sports' Dane Brugler reported that the Terps' wideout was being praised by the event's coaching staff.

NFL Media analyst Charles Davis believes Maryland senior WR Deon Long "can be an effective and dangerous slot receiver."

"Texas State CB Craig Mager has gone up against Long in East team drills and was impressed with Long's quickness off the ball," passed along College Football 24/7 writer Mike Huguenin. Long looked "like the best receiver" on Tuesday at East-West Shrine game practices, TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline noted.

Maryland senior WR Deon Long "received praise from the coaching staff [on multiple occasions at East-West Shrine game practices] for his consistent effort working back and attacking the ball, making sure the defensive back and no chance to make a play," reported CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.

"Long has average height and a lean, wiry build, but he uses his size well and doesn't show any passiveness going up to highpoint with his hands," Brugler wrote. "Although Stefon Diggs gets most of the attention and is projected to be the first Maryland wide receiver drafted in the 2015 NFL Draft, Long has NFL talent himself and showed that on Monday." We see Long as an underrated prospect, assuming past questions about his work ethic are answered. He's doing a good job of that.

Maryland senior WR Deon Long looked "like the best receiver" on Tuesday at East-West Shrine game practices, according to TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline.

Long spent the past few seasons in Stefon Diggs' shadow, though, contrary to popular belief, we aren't convinced that Diggs is the superior player. Long's work ethic was questioned earlier in his career, a factor that perhaps conspired to drop his usage rate in Maryland's offense. Pauline wrote over the summer that Long would be on his "all underrated team."

Maryland senior WR Deon Long has accepted an invitation to play in the East-West Shrine game.

Some might argue Long has outplayed Stefon Diggs this season despite what the box scores say. Long is a lean receiver who has seen time on the outside in Maryland's offense.

Maryland senior WR Deon Long would start on TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline's "all underrated team."

"He’s accomplished in all areas of the game; as a pass catcher, blocker and run after the catch guy," the expert wrote. "He also offers decent size and sprinters speed. I feel he deserves a middle round grade and could end up under drafted next April." Unfortunately, work ethic is one area of the game in which Long has come up short recently. Maryland coach Randy Edsall called him out earlier this month after a few lackluster practices. "Deon's got to get a lot better," Edsall told reporters. "I'm not happy with the way Deon is practicing right now." Long missed nearly nine months of action after suffering a broken tibia last season, so a little rust is to be expected.

Maryland coach Randy Edsall called out senior WR Deon Long after Thursday's practice.

"Deon's got to get a lot better," Edsall told reporters. "I'm not happy with the way Deon is practicing right now." Long missed nearly nine months after suffering a broken tibia last season. He recorded 32 receptions for 289 yards and a touchdown before sustaining the injury. Edsall clearly believes it's a lack of effort, as opposed to rust, that is stalling Long's improvement. Long and Stefon Diggs are expected to form one of the Big 10's best receiving duos in 2014.
