Chiefs signed BYU WR Mitch Mathews.
Mathews (6'6/222) started two-plus seasons, parlaying 152 career catches into 2,083 yards (13.7 YPR) and 24 touchdowns. A good athlete for his size, Mathews ran 4.49 at BYU's Pro Day with a 36-inch vertical and 10-foot-9 broad jump. Mathews is old for a rookie after going on a three-year Mormon mission before college, but he's flier worthy as a height-weight-speed prospect. May 1 - 1:20 AM

NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt believes that with his strong Pro Day, BYU WR Mitch Mathews might have worked himself into the late-round draft conversation.

Brandt writes that Mathews has "the athleticism and speed needed to excel in the NFL." The analyst is quick to point out that the 6-foot-5, 222-pound Cougar's frame is already ready for the bright lights of the NFL red zone. As for the Pro Day in question, the one which hyped Brandt for Mathews as a draft prospect, he was officially timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.47 and 4.49 seconds. TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline had been hearing that a time closer to 4.60 seconds was expected there, making the run something of an eye-opener. Mathews also leaped a strong 10-foot-9 on the broad jump. Last season, he caught 54 passes for 737 yards and 11 touchdowns. The touchdown mark speaks to that big frame.

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline reports that the Packers will host BYU WR Mitch Mathews for a visit.

"Type of receiver they like in the late rounds," he added. The 6-foot-5, 222-pounder posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.41 seconds with a 38-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-9 broad jump at his Pro Day workout last month. He's got the tools.

BYU WR Mitch Mathews said that he received positive feedback from an NFL rep during Friday's Pro Day.

"They were really impressed, from what they told me. They said I did everything I could, and everything they thought I could do, I did. It exceeded my expectations, for sure," Mathews said. The 6-foot-5, 222-pounder posted an absolutely remarkable 40-yard dash time. TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline had been hearing from scouts that his expected range in the premier sprint was around 4.60 seconds. Mathews ran it in 4.41 seconds and 4.45 seconds. He later summed up the pre-draft season by saying, "It’s three months of a grind, I can assure you. Mentally, it’s tough." Just a shade over a month to go, young man. Hang in there.

According to TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline, BYU WR Mitch Mathews "turned heads with a tremendous workout" during Friday's Pro Day.

Mathews' 38-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-9 broad jump were nice displays of athleticism, but where he really made onlookers glance up and take note was in the 40-yard dash. Per Pauline, scouts generally expected him to run in the 4.60 range. The 6-foot-5, 222-pounder didn't just beat that, he destroyed it to the point where the rules of time and space ceased to matter. Mathews made the sprint in 4.41 seconds and (just to prove it wasn't a fluke), notched his second run in 4.45 seconds. Once all that magic sorcery was completed, Mathews took part in position work and "[h]e caught the ball well and ran good routes, the latter which had been a game-day issue," according to Pauline. Last season, the BYU then-senior produced a 54-737-11 receiving line for the Cougs.

BYU senior WR Mitch Matthews caught three passes for 44 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 70-6 win over Wagner.

Matthews didn't do much on the yardage front, but he logged a 20-yard touchdown catch from freshman QB Tanner Mangum in the first quarter and a 19-yarder in the second quarter. Through eight games, the towering 6-foot-6, 215-pound senior's caught 36 passes for 437 yards and eight touchdowns. His scoring frequency is nice, but DFS players shouldn't expect many yardage/catch explosions. He's registered 55 or fewer receiving yards in half of BYU's games to this juncture.

He was already having a nice game prior to the dramatic finish, having caught a 15-yard touchdown pass in second quarter. For the game, he caught three passes for 69 yards and the two scores. The 6-foot-6, 206-pound senior compiled 922 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
