TCU OC Sonny Cumbie will call the offensive plays in 2017.
Cumbie has been the co-offensive coordinator with Doug Meacham for the past three years, but we're assuming he gets the title to himself now that Meacham left for Kansas. The Horned Frogs hired former Cal HC Sonny Dykes over the weekend, but that move apparently doesn't conflict with Cumbie's ascension to chief play-caller. Jan 16 - 2:41 PM

TCU co-OC Sonny Cumbie said, "The people at TCU have made it really clear they want us there."

On December 7, Cumbie was reportedly offered a three-year contract from Texas to serve as their offensive coordinator. He opted not to jump ship. Cumbie and his wife are expecting a son in February and he indicated a move would have been a difficult sell to the family. Beyond that, he's comfortable in Fort Worth. Said the 34-year-old, "I believe in Coach Patterson, the foundation of things he's done here. I believe in our kids, Dallas-Fort Worth, what a great place to recruit to. Our facilities are second to none. They're not as big, but just as nice."

TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie's "relative lack of experience is an issue, but if [Trevone] Boykin and TCU's offense put up the numbers expected of them, there likely will be an AD (or two or three) willing to overlook that," writes NFL Media.

The 33-year-old led the nation in passing in 2004 as a senior at Texas Tech (4,742 yards). Cumbie joined Mike Leach's staff at his alma mater in 2009 as a grad assistant and became the Red Raiders' inside receivers coach in 2011. Kliff Kingsbury promoted him to co-coordinator in 2013 and then Cumbie moved on. "Last season was his first at TCU, and as the Horned Frogs' quarterback coach, he is given a lot of credit for the strong play of Trevone Boykin," wrote College Football 24/7 writer Mike Huguenin.

TCU hired Texas Tech assistant coach Sonny Cumbie as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Cumbie, of course, is a former Red Raiders quarterback. He is leaving TTU because Gary Patterson offered more input over the game plan, as well as the opportunity to tutor quarterbacks. "It was just a really good opportunity within the profession for me to make a move," said Cumbie, who was the receivers coach at Tech. "It just so happened to be to a conference opponent." Patterson has been working diligently this winter to revamp his sorry offense. He already hired former Houston offensive coordinator Doug Meachem to be the Frogs' primary play-caller.
