As Miami transitions to incoming DC Manny Diaz's 4-3 scheme, Diaz says his players will play more aggressively and physically.
Diaz is talking about the little things like setting a hard edge, pursuing the ball until the whistle and taking intelligent angles. He has some help in the chalk room, namely from former Missouri assistant Craig Kuligowski, who oversaw a spate of stud defensive linemen with the Tigers. Last year, Mizzou ranked No. 2 in the FBS with 106 tackles for loss, while Miami had a mere 66. "[The players] instantly bought in because they see this defense is about defensive linemen making plays," Diaz said. [They] know his track record, so he had instant credibility when he walked in and then he said, ‘Hey, by the way, we’re playing a scheme where instead of you worrying about tying up blocks or standing on the line of scrimmage, we’re going to eat in the backfield.’" Thu, May 26, 2016 07:54:00 PM

While discussing the 2016 recruiting class, Miami DC Manny Diaz said, "First and foremost we want to be defined by our toughness."

"We want to be aggressive. We want our defensive line to penetrate," Diaz said, "and that should sound familiar because it was here in the ‘80s, then it became the trend in college football." 10 of the 18 recruits HC Mark Richt brought on board are of the defensive variety, with LB Shaquille Quarterman, Rivals No. 74 overall player in this cycle, leading the pack. While he might want to bring back the hard-hitting defenses of years past, Diaz is also preaching a fresh start. "You want everybody to have a clean slate. Even if you were great last year, it doesn’t matter. If you were bad last year, it doesn’t matter," he said.

Miami hired Mississippi State DC Manny Diaz to serve in the same capacity.

Diaz has deep Miami ties, as his father is a former mayor of the city. HC Mark Richt called him "one of the best defensive minds in the country." In the past, Diaz has served as defensive coordinator for Middle Tennessee State, Texas, Louisiana Tech and (most recently) Mississippi State. "God blessed me with a chance to return home," Diaz said, "to coach in my hometown and to reunite with family. It is the kind of opportunity that comes along rarely in this business. It was simply too good to pass up." While the team's set at defensive coordinator, the status of OC James Coley and interim HC Larry Scott remains up in the air. Richt has indicated that he expects to have filled out his full staff by mid-January.

Manny Diaz has accepted the defensive coordinator job at Louisiana Tech, according to CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman.

Diaz signed on for the gig, according to Feldman, after declining to pursue other coaching opportunities from the "Big Ten, SEC & Pac-12 programs so he could be a DC." Diaz was forced to play scapegoat in Austin last year well before Mack Brown, getting axed as DC after an embarrassing loss to BYU in the season's second game. Diaz was also Mississippi State's coordinator in 2010. "I am very excited Manny Diaz is joining our staff," head coach Skip Holtz said in a statement. "He brings great experiences with a lot of success at a lot of different stops. He brings excitement, a passion for the game, plenty of experience and a reputation for success that precedes him."
