Utah hired former Oregon State HC Gary Andersen to serve as associate head coach and defensive assistant.
Anderson will join the staff after Jan. 9, when the NCAA's new rule allowing 10 assistant coaches takes effect. It's a typically strong hire for HC Kyle Whittingham, with Anderson bringing plenty of experience to the table as former head coach of Oregon State -- he stepped down in October -- and Wisconsin. This will be Andersen's third stint on staff with the Utes, having previously worked at the program from 1997-2002 and again from 2004-08. He also played center in Salt Lake City from 1985-86. Football Scoop's Doug Samuels reports that SMU is "strongly considering" hiring former Oregon State HC Gary Andersen as defensive coordinator.

Andersen abruptly left Oregon State in early October after the Beavers limped out to a 1-5 start. He would bring a wealth of experience to the staff of HC Sonny Dykes, having worked as defensive coordinator at Utah (2005-08) and serving as head coach at Utah State (2009-12) and Wisconsin (2013-2014) before he took over at Oregon State in the winter of 2013.

Oregon State football coach Gary Andersen and the university agreed to mutually part ways on Monday.

Beavers AD Scott Barnes called Andersen's decision "unprecedented in major college athletics." In leaving Corvallis, Andersen agreed to waive all future payments and contract obligations. He had just agreed to a contract extension through 2021 this past December. Andersen ended up going 7-23 during his tenure. While things looked like they could potentially turn around this fall, the Beavers are 1-5 and have lost their last four games by a combined score of 180-54. "Coaching is not about the mighty dollar," Andersen said. "It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. Success comes when all parties involved are moving in the same direction." CB coach Cory Hall was named interim coach.

Oregon State HC Gary Andersen received a contract extension through the 2021 season.

"Extending Coach Andersen's contract reflects my belief that we have the coach in place who is capable of taking Beaver football to bowls and conference championships, and preparing our student-athletes to be champions in life beyond football," said school president Ed Ray. Andersen initially signed a six-year contract with the Beavers in 2014. While the team went just 4-8 this past season, they played competitively in multiple Pac-12 contests and even managed to kick Oregon while the Ducks were down via a 34-24 win in the Civil War to close the regular season.

A Pac-12 defensive coach is convinced Oregon State is on the rise.

"We played them [at a previous stop]," the coach said. "I have a lot of respect for what he's capable of doing. There's no doubt he has a plan in place. Unfortunately, they're going to get better. I wish they weren't." Treston Decoud and Dwayne Williams are a nice duo at corner, and the offense should be fronted by emerging RB Ryan Nall. The Beavers will be better than last season's 2-10, but we struggle to see them tripling that win output to reach bowl eligibility this fall.

Construction at Oregon State's Reser Stadium inadvertently revealed what are believed to be bones of a mammoth.

Beautiful. The discovery was made on Monday, as a crew worked on expanding the Valley Football Center at the stadium's north end. The site's intended to eventually house the Beaver locker room. OSU spokesman Steve Clark said, "We believe we have an intact femur from a mammoth. There also appear to be bones from other species, including possibly a bison and a camel." A university professor told Clark that after an examination of the bones, they're believed to be at least 10,000 years old. No word as to whether Oregon will now rip apart their stadium to search for dinosaurs in an attempt to one-up their in-state rivals in a sort of modern day reenactment of the 1800's Bone Wars between Edward Cope and O.C. Marsh.

Oregon State HC Gary Andersen indicated that he expects Arizona to come out with a strong effort on Saturday.

Said Andersen, "That's a program that's used to being in the hunt for championships and playing to win titles and playing to win bowl games. So I'm sure they're right where they need to be and they're excited about getting ready for this next game." That next game, of course, coming against Andersen's Beaver squad on Saturday. The Wildcats are reeling right now, having lost by significant margins to UCLA and Stanford in each of the last two weeks. Oregon State's allowing 178 yards rushing per game and 153 yards passing.

The Portland Tribune is reporting Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen will take the same position with Oregon State and both schools have confirmed the news.

Many will scratch their heads over this decision as it seems like a lateral move at best. Andersen is well respected by college and NFL coaches and is from the west coast. After leaving Utah for Utah State, it seems like the head coach wanted to return to that side of the country. He will bring his power, zone blocking offense to the Pac-12. Oregon State's former coach, Mike Riley, just moved to Nebraska. The carousel continues.

Wisconsin HC Gary Andersen will coach boundary LBs in 2014.

Andersen had previously given the job to a graduate assistant, according to Chris Vannini. The Badgers mainly run an odd man front, so generating disruption on the edge is very important. Andersen has plenty of defensive line work on his resume.

Wisconsin signed Gary Andersen to a new contract on Monday that will pay him $300,000 more beginning in 2014.

Andersen's 2014 salary has been bumped from $1.9 million to $2.2 million and he'll receive a $100,000 raise each year of his five-year rollover contract. After leading the Badgers to a 9-4 record in his first year on campus, Andersen flirted with the Browns in January. "Gary did not ask directly or even imply that his salary should be increased, but that only re-affirmed my thoughts about adjusting his compensation," Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez said. "I've always believed that we should do what we can to keep good coaches in our department and that is why I wanted to take this proactive approach with Coach Andersen."

The Browns secretly interviewed Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen, reported the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The meeting worked out for both parties, as Andersen received an extension and a raise, and Cleveland hired Mike Pettine. Andersen, however, must sooth over some ruffled feathers in Madison now that his clandestine affairs have been published. "Officials from the Cleveland Browns contacted me to talk about their head coaching vacancy," Andersen said in a statement released by the university. "After our initial conversation, I decided not to pursue the position. I am committed to the University of Wisconsin and the student-athletes in our program."

Wisconsin extended coach Gary Andersen's contract by one year.

Financial arrangements weren't announced. Andersen's deal now runs through January 2019. He originally signed a five-year, $10 million contract when he arrived from Utah State last year. Andersen led the Badgers to a 9-4 finish and a Capital One Bowl loss to South Carolina.
