Texas Tech redshirt freshman OLB Mike Mitchell mentioned that his "dad's health" and a "injury that really limited" him on the field, played in to his reason for leaving Ohio State.
"Honestly, a lot of it had to do with my family. My dad’s health isn’t great. It wasn’t as bad when I left (for Ohio State), and for a while it seemed to be getting better. But now, it’s kind of not as good. Plus, I had an injury that really limited me on the field last year as well," Mitchell said. The former five-star recruit will have to sit out the season for transferring to Texas Tech. The 6-foot-3, 222 pound OLB was hoping to win an appeal for a hardship waiver. Jul 6 - 8:26 PM

Texas Tech redshirt freshman OLB Mike Mitchell will be forced to sit out the 2014 season to satisfy NCAA regulations.

Mitchell transferred in late May, but the Texas Tech staff had hoped he would be eligible to play immediately. The linebacker's reasoning for switching schools was to be closer to his ailing father, something that had been taken into account in other instances by the NCAA. Mitchell is a former five-star recruit.

Former Ohio State redshirt freshman OLB Mike Mitchell has transferred to Texas Tech.

Mitchell wanted to move closer to his Plano, Texas home to be near his ailing father. The former five-star recruit was forced to redshirt during his only season in Columbus due to injury. Many believe Mitchell will win an appeal for a hardship waiver that would allow him to play for the Red Raiders in 2014, a huge coup for coach Kliff Kingsbury. Texas A&M and Baylor also went after the No. 3 outside linebacker in the country in 2012.
