Tennessee Tech redshirt senior QB Hayden Rettig has left the team citing personal reasons.
This will probably be our last blurb on Rettig barring the unexpected. His has been a meandering trip through the collegiate landscape. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder began his career at LSU as a four-star recruit in the 2013 class, then transferred to Rutgers during the 2014 offseason, sat out that campaign, played in five games for the Scarlet Knights in 2015 and did not see the field in 2016. He transferred to Tennessee Tech this offseason. Fri, Sep 15, 2017 08:13:00 PM

Rutgers graduate QB Hayden Rettig transferred to Tennessee Tech.

"It’s a good fit. I think we can do a lot there. I love the coaches. I just wanted a place where I was needed, and Tennessee Tech was the place," Rettig said. The gunslinger failed to find success with the Scarlet Knights after transferring over to Rutgers from LSU prior to the start of the 2014 campaign. He made just one start with the team over the course of two seasons.

Rutgers redshirt junior QB Hayden Rettig will transfer.

The former four-star recruit flamed out at LSU before flaming out at Rutgers. We'd guess he's hoping to find an advantageous FCS situation to slide into for his last year of eligibility. Rettig is immediately eligible to play wherever he goes as a postgraduate.

Rutgers HC Kyle Flood does not plan on playing backup redshirt sophomore QB Hayden Rettig against Wisconsin.

Rettig played two series against Ohio State's second team defense, completing 3-of-7 passes for 72 yards and one touchdown. Starting quarterback Chris Laviano has played okay, but some beat writers wonder why the coach does not even want to see what he has in Rettig. The two quarterbacks opened the season as co-starters.

Rutgers redshirt sophomore QB Hayden Rettig went 9-for-11 for 110 yards and a touchdown in the first half of Saturday's blowout win of Norfolk State.

Rettig also ran for a touchdown. He was replaced in the third quarter by Chris Laviano, who was suspended in the first half. Laviano went 4-for-4 for 138 yards and three touchdowns while getting to throw to star receiver Leonte Carroo, who also sat out the first half due to suspension. This game didn't clarify Rutgers' QB race in the slightest. Rutgers didn't make either quarterback available to the media after the game. Asked about the competition, HC Kyle Flood said: "They are not making it easy on me."

Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood expects to announce his starting 2015 quarterback at halftime of the opener against Norfolk State.

Sophomore Chris Laviano is suspended for the first half, which means the results of his battle with Hayden Rettig don't need to be announced until he's eligible to return. "Hayden Rettig is the starting quarterback," Flood said. "We’re going to evaluate the first half and we’ll make a decision at halftime as to how we’re going to proceed." Star wide receiver Leonte Carroo is also suspended for the first half, so it really wouldn't be fair to evaluate Rettig based on those 30 minutes. Flood is playing coy for competitive reasons against a team his squad should blow off the field. This is also called being annoying.

Former Hofstra quarterback Anton Clarkson said that "there's not a single coach in the NFL that wouldn't be impressed with [Rutgers redshirt sophomore QB Hayden Rettig's ability to throw the ball]."

"You have a kid that can flick his wrist and drop it 70-75 [yards] like it's nothing," said Clarkson, who's been training Rettig since the quarterback's time in middle school. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound transfer from LSU struggled in spring practice, but head coach Kyle Flood said that there's been a "night and day" difference in August. With sophomore Chris Laviano suspended for the first half of the team's season-opener against Norfolk State, Rettig will at least have a shot to impress with that big arm, though there's no guarantee that he holds the job permanently.

Rutgers sophomore Chris Laviano has been suspended for the first half against Norfolk State, which means redshirt sophomore Hayden Rettig will start at QB, according to Joe Schad.

The two quarterbacks were competing for the starting job, so by default Rettig wins the competition. Who knows if Laviano will be immediately inserted in the second half, but Rettig, an LSU transfer, gets the first shot at holding on to the position.

Former LSU redshirt freshmen QB Hayden Rettig transferred to Rutgers.

Rettig will sit out the 2014 season and retain two years eligibility beginning in 2015. The four-star member of LSU’s 2013 recruiting class was the No. 3 pro-style QB in the country coming out of high school, and the No. 73 overall prospect. Boston College was the reported frontrunner for Rettig's services once he decided to move on from LSU, but former BC QB Chase Rettig's little brother spurned the Eagles.

Former LSU QB Hayden Rettig took an official visit to Rutgers on Tuesday.

Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman points out that Rutgers lost one of their quarterbacks when Phillip Nelson was let go. Rettig was previously rated as one of the top pro-style recruits in the country and is the brother of Chase, Boston College's former starter. Rutgers also offered Hayden a scholarship out of high school.

LSU QB Hayden Rettig confirmed to the New Orleans Times-Picayune that he will transfer.

The Times-Picayune speculates that Chase's brother could land at Boston College. Rettig finished spring practices No. 3 on the depth chart behind sophomore Anthony Jennings and freshman Brandon Harris. Rettig, a former four-star recruit, was the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the country in 2013.
