Texas Tech has reinstated freshman DB Nigel Bethel after he was cleared of felony assault charges.
We are shocked, and anyone else who saw the video of the incident online likely is as well. Bethel punched a member of the Texas Tech women's basketball program during a game of pickup ball. Amber Battle did initiate the contact after a rebound and the two could be seen exchanging words before the punch was thrown. Battle even said she believed her punishment should be equal to Bethel's. Regardless, we are still surprised by the ruling. Texas Tech did announce that Bethel has been suspended for three games this season. The defensive back was a four-star recruit. Jul 16 - 5:36 PM

Bethel's lawyer tweeted "provided a letter from the Lubbock County Grand Jury to [Tech athletic director] Kirby Hocutt expressing their desire that (Bethel) be re-instated." We highly doubt that will happen. A video of the event in question has been posted online, and Bethel can clearly be seen striking Amber Battle during a game of pickup basketball. Battle did admit to initiating the physical contact following a rebound.
