Auburn redshirt junior CB Jamel Dean went through concussion protocol tests during the second half of Saturday's game against Mississippi State.

Dean, who had to deal with a hand injury at the start of the season, was slow to get up after a Mississippi State first down conversion during the third quarter. The junior cornerback's injury left led to Christian Tutt being inserted into the lineup. On the season Dean has ten total tackles and one interception, which he picked up in Auburn's season-opening win over Washington.

Auburn redshirt junior CB Jamel Dean (fingers) is expected to be able to play in Saturday's game against Alabama State.

Dean (6'2/200) got two of the fingers on his right hand caught in a jersey during practice last week, but he was able to play against Washington without issue on Saturday. Indeed, any lingering soreness, there, probably disappeared the second he recorded his first career interception. Dean is among the fastest players in the FBS, having been earlier timed (electronically) at 4.30 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Auburn redshirt junior CB Jamel Dean has been timed electronically with a 4.30-second run in the 40-yard dash.

Dean (6'2/200) has pulled off the remarkable feat of coming all the way back from multiple serious knee injuries stretching back to high school. Those injuries were what ultimately led him to an Auburn transfer out of Ohio State after initially signing on with the Buckeyes in 2014. He finally was healthy enough to stay on the field and produce this past season, in what had to feel like a breath of fresh air for the embattled corner. For the campaign, he registered 43 tackles with eight passes defended. A whip-smart young man in the classroom, Dean has logged jumps of 38 inches (vertical) and 128 inches (broad) in addition to setting the 40-yard dash on fire. On his annual list of "Freaks," The Athletic's Bruce Feldman slides Dean into the fray as his No. 10 workout warrior. The esteemed analyst's exercise goes 50 players deep this year.

Auburn redshirt freshman CB Jamel Dean is out indefinitely after suffering a knee injury.

This according to HC Gus Malzahn. The specifics of the injury aren't known, but it is significant enough that Dean will have to undergo surgery. This isn't the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder's first injury rodeo -- high school injuries (torn ACL among them) led to a medical disqualification from Ohio State in May of last year. He subsequently transferred to Auburn, where he sat out the 2015 season.

Auburn freshman CB Jamel Dean was informed by the NCAA that he must sit out this season and take a redshirt.

It's rather unfortunate. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder committed to Ohio State in 2014 but was controversially medically disqualified because of a recurring knee injury. Some accused Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer of oversigning and then pushing out Dean to get his roster numbers down. Dean, who was cleared by Dr. James Andrews, transferred to Auburn and applied for a hardship waiver that would’ve granted him immediate eligibility, but he was ultimately unsuccessful. "Oh my gosh, I’d say I’m going to have a lot of anger built up for that game," Dean said when asked about a matchup between Auburn and Ohio State in the College Football Playoff. "A lot of people are hoping it will happen — friends, coaches, other people that were supporting me."

The 6-foot-2, 200 pound Dean was a former four-star prospect before signing with the Buckeyes. Dean committed to Ohio State in 2014 and enrolled prior to spring practices, unfortunately he was medically disqualified. In high school, Dean suffered multiple knee injuries, including a torn ACL.
