Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley completed 12-of-22 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown in a 38-3 victory over Maryland on Saturday.
McSorley added 64 rushing yards and two ground scores. It's bad form to nitpick a performance this strong, but we do feel compelled to add that McSorley once again didn't complete 60% of his passes. He's done so only twice this year after completing 66.5% of his passes last season. Penn State is headed into bowl season at 9-3. McSorley won't get an offseason this year. He accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this week and will prepare for the NFL Draft thereafter. Nov 24 - 7:02 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

McSorley has battled some injuries this year, and his passing numbers have been disappointing with a 53.6 completion percentage and 15/6 TD/INT ratio in 2018. He's also one of the best "dual-threat" quarterbacks in college football, and he's led the Nittany Lions to Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowls in the last two years; with another big bowl game possible. Performing well at the event would go a long way towards McSorley becoming a draftable quarterback.
Nov 21 - 4:02 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley completed 17-of-37 passes for 183 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in a 20-7 victory over Rutgers on Saturday.

McSorley was a major disappointment in this one and struggled to consistently complete passes (45.9 percent) despite playing against the worst team in the Big 10. Both of his touchdown passes on the day went to TE Patrick Freiermuth. His completion percentage is down over 12 percent since last season, one of the factors in Penn State's offensive decline this year. He now has 15 touchdowns and six interceptions on the year and will square off against Maryland in their final regular season game.
Nov 17 - 5:17 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley completed 19-of-25 passes for 160 yards with a touchdown in a 22-10 victory over Wisconsin on Saturday.

McSorley didn't have much luck on the ground, rushing for just nine yards. He also was forced out of the game when he aggravated his leg injury, but he was able to return, and he made enough plays to give the Nittany Lions the win. Assuming he's healthy, McSorley should have a huge game next Saturday against lowly Rutgers.
Nov 10 - 3:18 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley (leg) is taking part in second-half warmups in Saturday's game against Wisconsin.

McSorley was forced out injured on a sack in the first half, with Tommy Stevens replacing him. The tough-as-nails redshirt senior looks to be warming up in earnest after halftime, though, and the general vibe seems to be that he might try to give it a go once the second half boots up. We will pass along updates as warranted.
Nov 10 - 1:56 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley stayed down injured after taking a sack in the second quarter of Saturday's game against Wisconsin.

Uh oh. McSorley has been dealing with a knee injury over the past few weeks but has been able to start without issue. He did manage to eventually get up and walk off under his own power on Saturday, but is currently on the sideline, with Tommy Stevens entering in his stead. It would obviously be a serious blow for the Nittany Lions if McSorley can't return. Stay tuned.
Nov 10 - 1:25 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley (undisclosed) practiced on Wednesday.

McSorley was replaced by Tommy Stevens in the third quarter of Saturday's loss to Michigan. While this will be something to monitor leading up to kickoff versus Wisconsin this weekend, that he was out there practicing in full on Wednesday is a pretty good sign that the Nittany Lions expect him to be taking opening snaps against the Badgers. We will continue to monitor the situation and pass along information as warranted.

Nov 8 - 5:14 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley completed 5-of-13 passes for 83 yards with an interception in a 42-7 loss to Michigan on Saturday.

Yikes. McSorley also ran for negative five yards, making this easily his worst game of 2018, and probably the worst effort we've seen of him in a Nittany Lions' uniform altogether. The leg injury he suffered against Iowa the previous week likely didn't help, but the decision making was also poor, and his interception was returned for a touchdown. We need to keep an eye on McSorley's status going forward, especially with Penn State eliminated from pretty much everything but a decent bowl. Wisconsin comes next Saturday.
Nov 3 - 7:14 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley (leg) completed 11-of-25 passes for 167 yards, a touchdown and an interception while rushing for 63 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 30-24 win over Iowa.

Once again, Penn State's passing offense struggled to get going. But just like last week, McSorley overcame a poor throwing day with his work on the ground. McSorley caught Iowa napping on a 51-yard touchdown gallop in the third quarter that ended up being crucial. McSorley was taken into the locker room just before halftime after a few Hawkeye defenders converged on him on a big sack. He was able to return in the second half with a bulky brace on his right knee. That's something to keep an eye on this week. One-hundred percent or not, McSorley will be tested again next week at Michigan.
Oct 27 - 7:38 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley (leg) has returned to Saturday's game against Iowa.

McSorley, who was taken back to the locker room just before halftime, was out on the field leading the Penn State offense on the team's first drive of the third quarter. He made a significant play on the drive as well, breaking off a 51-yard touchdown run that gave Penn State a 24-17 lead.
Oct 27 - 6:01 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley (leg) was taken to the locker room just before halftime of Saturday's game against Iowa.

McSorley injured his leg while being sacked, and after emerging from the injury tent with a bulky brace on his right knee was eventually able to return to the game. But that would be for just one series before team trainers made the decision to take him back to the locker room ahead of halftime. Should the senior quarterback be unable to return, redshirt junior Tommy Stevens would lead the Penn State offense.
Oct 27 - 5:41 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley (leg) has returned to Saturday's game against Iowa.

McSorley was clutching his right leg and had to leave the contest against the Hawkeyes, but he's back on the field now, so it appears the senior signal-caller has avoided a serious injury.
Oct 27 - 5:05 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley (leg) was helped off the field after taking a hard hit during Saturday's game against Iowa.

It was reported that McSorley grabbed his right leg after being sacked, and it remains to be seen if he'll be able to return to the game. The redshirt senior was able to walk off under his own power, but he did so gingerly. Should McSorley, who was taken to the injury tent, not be able to return then redshirt junior Tommy Stevens would be next in line to lead the Penn State offense.
Oct 27 - 4:34 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley completed 19-of-36 passes for 220 yards and an interception while rushing for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 19 attempts in Saturday's 33-28 win over Indiana.

On a windy day in Bloomington, McSorley was not able to get much of anything going through the air. As he's done in several games this season, though, he made up for his lackluster work as a passer via a strong effort rushing. This was his second 100-yard rushing game of the campaign and his third of at least 90 yards. For reference's sake, McSorley did not better 65 yards on the ground in a game last season. Of course, he also threw 28 touchdown passes in 2017. He's currently sitting on just 11 scoring tosses in 2018.
Oct 20 - 8:09 PM

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley completed 19-of-32 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 21-17 loss to Michigan State.

McSorley managed a five-yard touchdown pass to KJ Hamler in the first quarter, but outside of that scoring toss, he was mostly shut down by a Michigan State pass defense which had been exceedingly porous through the first month-plus of the campaign. The redshirt senior signal-caller has now been held under 200 yards passing in three of six games. He's been held to 230 or fewer in five of six contests. Penn State will face off with Indiana next weekend.
