Minnesota HC P.J. Fleck told reporters that Minnesota redshirt senior RB Rodney Smith (knee) will apply for a sixth year of eligibility.
Smith is going to miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury he sustained in the victory over Fresno State on Saturday. The new transfer rules say that a player can be given a redshirt year if they play in no more than four games, but Smith took a redshirt year to begin his career, so he'll have to apply for a sixth year in order to play. Considering he played in just five quarters, it'd be a surprise if he wasn't granted the extra year, but it's not a lock. Mon, Sep 10, 2018 07:39:00 PM

Minnesota redshirt senior RB Rodney Smith will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

This is a massive loss for the Gophers, and anyone who likes watching good running backs. Smith suffered the injury against Fresno State in the first half after catching a screen pass against the Bulldogs. The Gophers are already without Shannon Brooks, and Mohamed Ibrahim was unable to play on Saturday with a leg injury as well. When Ibrahim is able to return he likely becomes the starter, but for now, the backfield belongs to freshman Bryce Williams, with Seth Green getting the short-yardage and goal line carries.

Updating a previous report, Minnesota redshirt senior RB Rodney Smith (lower leg) suffered an injury against Fresno State, but head coach P.J. Fleck offered very little details after the contest.

Fleck said he did not know the specific injury, but said the running back will go for tests. "It's a lower extremity injury. Knee, ankle - not sure. We'll find out soon...get some pictures (MRI) and things like that," Fleck said. Backup RB Mohamed Ibrahim was injured in the season opener against New Mexico State, and the team lost Shannon Brooks (knee) to an offseason injury. Bryce Williams and Jonathan Femi-Cole might be forced into larger roles going forward.

Minnesota senior RB Rodney Smith was helped off of the field after suffering an apparent left knee injury during the first half of Saturday's game against Fresno State.

This is a huge development for Minnesota, which was already without injured redshirt freshman Mohamed Ibrahim. In Minnesota's season-opening win over New Mexico State Sept. 1, Smith rushed for 153 yards on 24 carries while also catching a pass for 21 yards. With Smith down and Ibrahim out, Minnesota's left with true freshman Bryce Williams to shoulder the load.

Minnesota senior RB Rodney Smith rushed for 153 yards on 24 carries in Thursday's 48-10 win over New Mexico State.

Smith (5’11/210) was great on a big workload in the season opener. Just like last year, it looks like the Golden Gophers will ride Smith, especially with the team starting a true freshman at quarterback. With a big lead, Smith exited, but he was seen limping on the sideline. However, it doesn’t seem very serious. Minnesota plays Fresno State next on Saturday.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline believes that Minnesota redshirt junior RB Rodney Smith projects as a third-down back at the NFL level.

He gives the tailback a seventh-round grade, which is second behind Minnesota linebacker Thomas Barber on the roster. Pauline calls Smith a "a very quick, creative running back. He’s a multi-cut ball carrier with solid pass-catching hands out of the backfield and nicely projects as a third-down back." Third-down backs aren't the most exciting prospects, but Smith has been production when healthy, and should carve out an NFL career because of the skill set Pauline mentions.

Minnesota redshirt sophomore RB Rodney Smith ran for 134 yards and had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Saturday's 54-21 victory over Nebraska.

With Shannon Brooks out again, the Gophers needed Smith to step up. He did, running for a season-high yardage total, his third 100-yard game of the campaign. This crucial victory squared Minnesota' record at 5-5. Needing one win to go bowling, Minnesota travels to Northwestern next week before closing out the regular season at home against Wisconsin.

Minnesota redshirt sophomore RB Rodney Smith (undisclosed) should be able to play on Saturday against Maryland.

Smith (5'11/200) missed the second half of the game game against Middle Tennessee State, but it appears he was just precautionary. Fellow tailback Shannon Brooks is likely back this week as well, so the two should go back to splitting carries this week against the Terrapins.

Minnesota redshirt sophomore RB Rodney Smith did not start the second half due to an injury concern.

Smith racked up 107 yards rushing on 16 carries in the first half, but has yet to see a carry in the second half due to an undisclosed injury. Kobe McCrary will see the bulk of work on the ground for the Gophers through to the end of the contest unless Smith is able to reenter the game.

Minnesota redshirt sophomore RB Rodney Smith rushed for 76 yards on 23 carries in Thursday's 17-7 win over Buffalo.

Smith did not exactly light the field aflame -- his long run went for just 10 yards -- but he paced the Gophers on the ground nonetheless. Fellow running back Shannon Brooks received 18 carries for 69 yards and a score in the contest. Both Smith and Brooks will continue to split totes of the rock as the season progresses. Minnesota will try to improve to 2-0 when they take on Oregon State a week from Saturday.
