Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline gives Notre Dame RB Dexter Williams a sixth-round grade.
Williams (5'11/215) emerged as a big-play back for the Fighting Irish after serving an early-season four-game suspension. The senior averaged 6.3 yards on his 158 carries, scored seven 20+ yard touchdowns, and went for six on 5-of-19 red zone carries. An interesting prospect with some off-the-field concerns, Williams needs to have a positive Senior Bowl week to become more than a sixth-rounder. Jan 20 - 3:20 PM

Date:

Notre Dame senior RB Dexter Williams ran for 54 yards on 16 carries in a 30-3 blowout loss to Clemson on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl Classic.

Williams also caught three passes for 29 yards. A few flashes of brilliance for the senior tailback, but not enough, as Notre Dame ran for just 88 yards against the stout Clemson defense. Williams had a breakout season despite missing the first four games with a suspension, and he's now off to the NFL. We'll see him in the Reese's Senior Bowl, and he performs well in that game, the 5-foot-11, 215-pound tailback should see his stock rise.

Notre Dame senior RB Dexter Williams accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

After missing the first four games of the year, Williams has been sensational for the Fighting Irish; leading the team in rushing and putting up monster numbers for the undefeated club. Durability is a question mark, but his breakaway speed and quality vision will be on full display in Mobile. If he shows enough of it -- and the medicals check out -- he could be a mid-round pick.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams ran for 97 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 54 yards in a 24-17 victory over USC on Saturday.

Ugly, but this is a rivalry game, and rivalry games often are. Williams really struggled early on against a clearly motivated USC defense, but he was able to make several plays in the screen game, and he scored the go-ahead touchdown with a 52-yard scamper in the third quarter. The Irish finish the year 12-0, and the only question now is where the Fighting Irish finish in the playoff standings. No. 3 is very likely.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams carried the ball 13 times for 74 yards with a touchdown in a 36-3 rout of Syracuse on Saturday.

Williams wasn't close to the dominant effort he had against Florida State (202 yards, two scores) against the Orange, and it was looking like he was going to have a season-low total of yards. On 2nd and 20 with just over four minutes left, he scampered for 32 yards and a score, however, and he's now reached paydirt in six-of-seven games. Williams will very likely score again next Saturday when the undefeated Fighting Irish take on USC.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams ran for 202 yards and two scores on 20 carries in a 42-13 walloping of Florida State on Saturday.

There was a time where running the football was quite difficult to do against Florida State. The year 2018 is not that time. Notre Dame ran for 365 yards against the Seminoles, and Williams, of course, was the largest benefactor. Despite missing the first four games, the junior tailback has a real chance of going over a thousand yards, and the two scores give him 10 on the season. This was way too easy for Notre Dame, and credit belongs to both parties. Notre Dame has a marquee matchup next Saturday against Syracuse.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams ran for 142 yards and scored three touchdowns on 23 carries in a 44-22 victory over Navy on Saturday.

The Irish were able to gash the Midshipmen for 254 yards on the ground and scored four rushing touchdowns, with Williams being the chief contributor to both numbers. To say that the junior tailback has taken advantage of his opportunity after being suspended for the first four games of the year is quite the understatement. It's his second three-touchdown game of his four appearances, and he's gone over 140 yards in three-of-four games. Williams and the 8-0 Fighting Irish will take on Northwestern in Chicago next Saturday.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said junior RB Dexter Williams is "making the most out of his [opportunity]."

Williams (5'11/215) missed the first four games of the season because of a suspension, but he has been electric in his first two games. In Saturday's 45-23 win over Virginia Tech, the junior back ran for three touchdowns and 178 yards on his 17 carries. His biggest play was a monstrous 97 yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Williams is now averaging 8.9 yards per carry and will enter next week's matchup against Pitt as Notre Dame's top running back.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams rushed for 178 yard and three touchdowns on 17 carries in Saturday's 45-23 win over Virginia Tech.

Williams (5'11/215) has come out with monster efforts in each of the last two games after he was sidelined for the first four contests on suspension. Against Stanford last weekend, he busted out for 161 yards and a score. Even stronger work versus the Hokies on Saturday. Over half of his yardage came on a thundering 97-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. That huge effort pushed the Irish to a 24-16 lead, one which they would not look back from. Williams will try for a third consecutive mega-showing against Pitt in Week 7.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams carried the rock 31 times for 161 yards and a touchdown in a 38-17 rout of Stanford on Saturday.

Williams was suspended for undisclosed reasons for the first four games, and on the very first carry he saw, he bolted for 45 yards and a touchdown to give Notre Dame a 7-0 lead. That was his biggest play of the game, but Williams (5'11/215) made several other strong runs, and kept Stanford honest while Ian Book tore apart the Cardinal secondary. There are several talented running backs, but Williams earned more carries from this performance. It should start Saturday when the Irish face Virginia Tech.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams is expected to return from suspension this week against Stanford.

Williams sat out the team's first four games with an undisclosed suspension. HC Brian Kelly, who was closed-lipped about the suspension previously, said Sunday that Williams will return Saturday barring a slip-up this week. Williams will enter a compelling running back committee that already features Tony Jones Jr. and Jafar Armstrong. On 39 carries last year, Williams averaged 9.2 yards per carry, with 17 going for a first down. He's posted 641 career rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 99 carries.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams is expected to return from suspension on Sept. 29 against Stanford.

This is a really poorly kept secret, and you can blame curmudgeon Fighting Irish HC Brian Kelly for that. Kelly privately suspended Williams for four games for undisclosed reasons over the offseason, but word got out, as it tends to do. Instead of coming clean, Kelly would respond to questions about Williams' status by saying "he's on our roster" and he will be "dressed" and "on the sidelines" for games. The last game of Williams' four-game suspension is this weekend against Wake Forest. Williams will have a fight on his hands for touches with Tony Jones Jr. and Jafar Armstrong having established themselves early.

Notre Dame HC Brian Kelly said that junior RB Dexter Williams will be "dressed" and "on the sidelines" for Saturday's opener against Michigan.

While Kelly did not say outright that Williams would play in the game, that he'll be on the sideline dressed at all should be considered an encouraging sign. There's been a low rumble of rumor all offseason that the 5-foot-11, 215-pound junior could be facing a suspension (for reasons unknown) early in the year. Assuming he actually has an opportunity to play this weekend, Williams would represent an experienced cog for a rushing offense lacking in such pieces after rumbling his way to 560 yards combined over the past two seasons. Tony Jones Jr. and Jafar Armstrong figure to see a significant amount of work versus the Wolverines whether or not Williams plays in the contest.

When asked whether Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams will play in the team's opener versus Michigan, HC Brian Kelly said, "he's on our roster."

Kelly's evasiveness on the question is understandable enough, as Williams has had a devil of a time staying healthy during his career with the Irish and there's additionally been a low rumble of rumor this summer that he might be facing some kind of discipline to open the year. We'll be reading all the tea leaves we can find in camp this month. Notre Dame is out one Josh Adams for the coming campaign, but will try to cobble together an approximation of his fine work with the combination of Williams and Tony Jones Jr..

Notre Dame HC Brian Kelly praised junior RB Dexter Williams' spring performance.

Per Irish Illustrated's Pete Sampson, Kelly said Williams is "no longer a guy the staff isn’t confident can stay on the field." That's key for a couple reasons. Firstly, because Williams' availability was a constant question last fall. And secondly because Notre Dame is mighty, mighty thin at running back in the wake of Josh Adams' loss. Williams (5'11/216) and Tony Jones are first in line for carries.
