USC senior LB Cameron Smith (hamstring) is expected to play in Saturday's game against Oregon State.

Smith (6'2/250) has had a devil of a time staying healthy this season, with knee and hamstring injuries limiting him to five games played to date. It's been a pesky hamstring injury which has kept him out the past three games, though Smith said this week that he could have played against ASU on Saturday if the team had asked. Palaie Gaoteote has been starting in the senior's place while he's been out injured. Smith has registered 47 tackles (5.0 for loss), a sack and three passes defended when he's been healthy enough to play this year.

USC senior LB Cameron Smith is considered to be doubtful for Saturday's game against Arizona State with knee and hamstring injuries.

Video of Smith (6'2/250) going through a warmup ahead of Saturday's game in a T-shirt and shorts was posted to Twitter, but he's still considered to be doubtful. The senior linebacker is the leader of the USC defense, and the impact of his absence is noticeable. As a result of Smith's injuries freshman Palaie Gaoteote IV has started at middle linebacker, and that will remain the case against the Sun Devils.

USC senior LB Cameron Smith will not play in Saturday's game against Colorado due to a hamstring injury.

Smith did not participate in Wednesday's practice as a result of the hamstring issue, a development that turned out to be more concerning than originally anticipated. To say the least this is a huge loss for USC, as the senior is the team's leader in tackles with 47 (30 solo, 10 assisted). With Smith, whose run of 31 straight games comes to an end, ruled out freshman Palaie Gaoteote IV will make his first start at the college level.

USC senior LB Cameron Smith left Wednesday's practice early with a tight hamstring.

This is probably only precautionary. Assuming that's the case, Smith should be good to go Saturday against Colorado.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline writes that USC senior LB Cameron Smith is a "tough, instinctive linebacker who quickly locates the action and flies around the ball to make positive plays."

"He remains disciplined with assignments but quickly diagnoses the action and fights to get through blocks and make the play," Pauline notes, adding that the 6-foot-2, 245-pound Smith is "explosive, plays fast and will fit multiple schemes at the next level." The analyst passes along that there's a range of opinions as to the linebacker's draft grade, ranging from Round 3 to Round 7. Pauline, himself, hews toward the third round when it comes to his evaluation of the USC standout.

NFL Media's Lance Zierlein lists Cameron Smith 12th among his top linebackers to watch in 2018.

The Trojans lost several players to early defection last year, but Smith is back, and it's a big reason why they have a chance to compete for the Pac-12 South. "Smith has good size and solid instincts to help him get more head-starts on the play than most inside linebackers you will see," writes Zierlein. He also notes some negatives, such as that Smith doesn't really stand out on tape, and that he doesn't have the skill set or production of Josey Jewell; one of the top linebackers in the 2017 class.Still, Smith is one of the top players at the position, and another big year could see him go in the first 64 picks next season.

USC junior LB Cameron Smith will return to school for the 2018 season.

USC lost plenty on the offensive side of the ball -- QB Sam Darnold, RB Ronald Jones, WR Deontay Burnett -- but linebackers Porter Gustin and now Smith have both announced that they'll be back for one more rodeo with the Trojans. For his part, the 6-foot-2, 245-pound Smith is coming off his best season to date. He posted 112 tackles (5.0 for loss), an interception and three passes defended for the campaign. Those 112 tackles were good for second in the Pac-12 in 2017.

Smith was suspended for the first half of last week's game after being ejected for targeting in the final game of the 2016 season. Western Michigan posted 263 rushing yards against the Trojans last week. Smith will need to play at a high level in order to prevent Stanford from doing the same.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder logged 83 tackles (7.0 for loss) and four passes defended in 13 games last season. He should be good to go after he serves the little slap-on-the-wrist suspension.
