Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 6-of-17 passes for 105 yards in a 14-13 victory over Pittsburgh on Monday in the Sun Bowl.
Costello will likely remember this game fondly because Stanford won, but he won't look back at his individual performance with much reverence. He was constantly under pressure, to be fair, but he missed on a lot of throws, and he was very fortunate that a fumble in the end zone somehow fell into the arms of Cameron Scarlett to give Stanford the lead and ultimately the win. The 6-foot-4, 216-pound quarterback could enter the draft this year, but more than likely, he's back with Stanford with an opportunity to work his way up draft boards as a junior in 2019. Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 23-of-37 passes for 344 yards with five touchdowns and one interception in Saturday's 49-42 win over UCLA.

This game went back and fourth, but the difference in the game was the Costello-to-Arcega-Whiteside connection. The two of them connected on three touchdowns, which brings Costello's season touchdown total to 28 with the Cal game awaiting. Costello (6'4/216) has arguably been under appreciated with Stanford limping to a 7-4 record, but his season passing numbers are pretty good; The redshirt sophomore is averaging 8.6 yards per attempt with a quality 28/10 TD/INT ratio. Costello will get a chance to showcase his talents in the Cal rivalry game before heading to a bowl game.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 23-of-33 passes for 342 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in Saturday's 48-17 win over Oregon State.

Costello (6'4/216) now has four 300-yard games in his last five, but the big takeaway was the emergence of tight end Colby Parkinson, who had all four of Costello's touchdowns. The redshirt sophomore threw two red zone touchdowns to Parkinson, but they also connected for a huge 75-yard score along the sideline to blow the game open. With Bryce Love looking healthy as well, Stanford has a chance to finish strong, despite a disappointing season. The rivalry came against Cal awaits.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 29-of-43 passes for 347 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in a 27-23 loss to Washington on Saturday.

You typically don't see teams gash the Huskies through the air, and while some of this was in desperation mode -- and a large chunk came on a long (but meaningless) completion at the end of the first half -- Costello made some nice throws, and got Stanford back in the game after a 21-0 deficit. Unfortunately for the Cardinal, it wasn't enough, and they've dropped 4-of-5 games. They'll try to right the ship against Oregon State next Saturday.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 34-of-43 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday's 41-38 loss to Washington State.

Strong, strong effort by Costello and the rest of the Cardinal in this one. They just so happened to end up with the hot potato at the end of the fourth quarter. The redshirt sophomore threw three of his four touchdown passes in the first half, quieted in the third quarter and then came on for a huge game-tying touchdown toss to J.J. Arcega-Whiteside from 25 yards out with under two minutes remaining in the game. Alas for the home faithful, Wazzu would proceed to go ahead on a field goal, one which Stanford was unable to answer. This was Costello's first game with multiple touchdown passes since the first game of the campaign. He'll have to fight it through against UW's tough secondary next weekend.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 26-of-41 passes for 381 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Saturday's 40-21 loss against Utah.

Costello was forced to go to the air early and often, as the home team fell behind early on The Farm by 21 points. The quarterback was already expected to do a little more with RB Bryce Love (ankle) on the sidelined, but they abandoned the run a bit to try and get back into the game. Love's status is uncertain with the quick turnaround at Arizona State next Thursday, so Costello might be asked to do more again.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 15-of-27 passes for 174 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 38-17 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday.

Costello (6'4/216) was excellent in the overtime victory over Oregon last Saturday. He wasn't terrible against Notre Dame, but to say he didn't live up to the expectations set last week is an understatement. He was particularly poor in the second half, as Stanford just couldn't move the football in the loss to the tough Notre Dame defense. Costello will look to rebound next Saturday against Utah.

Stanford QB K.J. Costello completed 19-of-26 passes for 327 yards with three touchdown passes in a 38-31 victory over Oregon on Saturday in overtime.

Anyone that doubts that Costello has what it takes to lead Stanford to a Pac-12 title was at least given pause after this effort. He missed on a few throws, but to say that he was good in the second half is an understatement. Two of his touchdown throws went to J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, but the third was the game-winner in overtime to Colby Parkinson. This is still Bryce Love’s offense, but Costello showed a lot tonight. He’ll need to have another quality game next Saturday when Stanford faces off against Notre Dame.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 17-of-30 passes for 214 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in Saturday's 30-10 win over UC Davis.

Costello (6'4/216) wasn't at his best on Saturday, but it was definitely still good enough to take care of UC Davis at home. With Bryce Love missing the game, the Stanford offense needed Costello to pass a tad more than he did against USC last week. Costello's two touchdowns both went to big-bodied wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside in the red zone, who is clearly Costello's best target. Costello, Arcega-Whiteside, and Love -- who HC David Shaw expects to play -- will need to bring their best to keep up with Oregon's offense next week.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello completed 19-of-27 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown in a 17-3 victory over USC on Saturday.

Costello was not asked to do a ton on this one -- he rarely is -- but he was efficient and accurate with this throws, and he found Colby Parkinson for his lone touchdown. It wasn't the big effort he put up against San Diego State, but he wasn't facing nine-man fronts like he was against the Aztecs. Costello and the Cardinal get UC-Davis next Saturday.

Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello threw for four touchdowns and an interception along with 332 yards on 21-for-31 passing in a 31-10 victory over San Diego State on Friday.

Costello was certainly helped in this one by San Diego State's secondary -- and a whole lot of help came in the form of J.J. Arcega-Whiteside -- but this was a strong opener for the sophomore signal-caller. In addition to three score to Arcega-Whiteside, and he also found tight end Colby Parkinson for another score. With Bryce Love ineffective, it has to be promising for the Cardinal to see their passing game step up against a not-abhorrent team in San Diego State. Things get much tougher next week, however, as the Cardinal take on USC next Saturday.

Stanford HC David Shaw revealed that redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello (hip) is expected to be a full participant in August camp.

We generally don't get much from Shaw on the injury front, so it's nice to receive this bit of clarity in advance of the Cardinal's preseason camp, which will boot up next Friday. Costello (6'4/216) did not take part in spring practice while rehabbing from his hip issue -- we still don't know when it occurred -- but has not suffered any setback in the interim. He was a revelation last season after taking over for the uninspiring Keller Chryst (who has since transferred to Tennessee), throwing for 1,573 yards with a 14/4 TD/INT ratio for the overall campaign. We're stoked to see what he can do starting from the word "Go."

Stanford confirmed that redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello (hip) will not take part in spring practice.

This was first reported by Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman, with the Cardinal giving official word of Costello's status on Tuesday. The team did not specify the nature of his injury, but Feldman had earlier passed along that he's dealing with a hip issue. The expectation, here, is that the 6-foot-4, 216-pound redshirt sophomore will be healthy and ready to roll come the start of August camp. Costello jump-started the Cardinal offense after taking over as starter for an ineffective Keller Chryst midway through the 2017 season, finishing up the year having thrown for 1,573 yards (58.8-percent completions) with a 14/4 TD/INT ratio. With Davis Mills (knee) also set to miss the spring, redshirt sophomore Jack Richardson will be receiving all the reps that he can handle in the coming weeks.

Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman reports that Stanford redshirt sophomore QB K.J. Costello (hip) is "expected to be held out of full drills" during spring practice.

Just when Costello sustained this hip injury is unclear, but it sounds like he'll be limited to major degree this spring. There is no immediate timetable for his return to full health. This past season, the 6-foot-4, 216-pounder provided a breath of fresh air for the Cardinal after taking over midway through the campaign for an ineffective Keller Chryst. Costello would finish the year hot hot hot, tossing 10 of his 14 total touchdown passes on the season over his final four games. Chryst has since announced that he will transfer, leaving sophomore Davis Mills and junior Jack Richardson to fill in during spring work while Costello is on the mend.

Stanford redshirt freshman QB K.J. Costello completed 15-of-27 passes for 212 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Thursday's 39-37 loss to TCU in the Alamo Bowl.

Costello (6'4/216) connected with J.J. Arcega-Whiteside for all three of his touchdown passes. The final one in that trio gave the Cardinal a 37-36 lead with 6:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, but in this wild shootout, that score was never going to hold. TCU would drive down with a field goal answer to go back up on top and Stanford would be unable to answer, as Costello was picked off on the team's final drive of the game. The redshirt freshman ended up throwing 10 of his 14 touchdown passes on the season over the final four games of the campaign. He'll continue his development over the offseason. We've seen the Cardinal cycle through multiple quarterbacks since Kevin Hogan exited stage left several years back, but Costello has shown enough -- particularly late -- to lend at least some hope that the position turnstile might have finally stopped. Stay tuned.
