Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) took 60-percent of the snaps with the first team on Tuesday.
Freshman Sam Ehlinger took the rest. Speaking about his tenuous quarterback situation, HC Tom Herman said: "No Wally Pipp for the moment." In other words, as he's said before, Herman doesn't anticipate Buechele losing his job due to an injury. Buechele has missed the last two games with a bruised throwing shoulder suffered in the opening-game loss to Maryland. The Horns are on a much-needed bye this week, giving Buechele more time to heal. Texas HC Tom Herman said that if sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) is healthy, he will receive the bulk of the reps with the first-team offense this week.

It sounds like the sun may be setting on the Sam Ehlinger Era, at least for the time being. True freshman Ehlinger has started each of the past two games for the Longhorns while Buechele has been on the mend from a bruised throwing shoulder suffered at the beginning of the season. Texas is off on bye this next weekend before they face off with Iowa State in Week 5, giving Buechele plenty of time to heal up over the next two weeks.

Texas HC Tom Hermann says that sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) has increased his throwing each day of practice, and will probably play in "some capacity" on Saturday against USC.

It confirms an earlier report that Buechele is probable to play against the Trojans, but only muddles things more as to whether or not he'll start. Sam Ehlinger certainly held his own in week two, but this is a different animal we're talking about. We expect Buechele to make the start if healthy, but it's far from a certainty.

Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) is probable to play against USC on Saturday.

Buechele has returned to practice and OC Tim Beck likes the progress he's seen in recent days. That said, Beck declined to name Buechele the starter for Saturday's game against the Trojans. "Who knows right now," Beck said. "We’re just kind of waiting and seeing what happens. We’re plugging away as scheduled and working hard putting together our game plan and practicing. Obviously, as the week goes on we’ll have more information." With Buechele nursing a bruised throwing shoulder, true freshman Sam Ehlinger went 15-for-27 for 222 yards and a touchdown in last week's blowout win over San Jose State. If Buechele is surprisingly ruled out for USC, Ehlinger will start again.

Texas HC Tom Herman said that sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) took "limited reps" in practice on Tuesday.

Just how much Buechele was able to do in practice was not divulged. He missed this past Saturday's win over San Jose State while resting up a bruised throwing shoulder. True freshman Sam Ehlinger started in his place in that contest. Those two were listed with an "OR" between them on the Texas depth chart for this weekend's game against USC, but if Buechele is healthy, we see him drawing that big start. This situation will sort itself out over the coming days.
Sep 12 - 8:47 PM

On Texas' quarterback depth chart for the USC game posted on Monday, the Longhorns listed "Shane Buechele OR Sam Ehlinger."

Buechele sat out Saturday's win over San Jose State to rest his injured throwing shoulder. Ehlinger went on to throw for 222 yards and run for 48 yards in a 56-0 blowout. Jerrod Heard also ran for 39 yards in Wildcat packages. We expect Buechele to start if healthy, but this is a situation to monitor closely, as Tom Herman and crew haven't exactly closed the door on a quarterback competition. The Trojans are early 17-point favorites to beat the Longhorns at home on Saturday.

Sep 12 - 3:30 PM

Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against San Jose State.

With Buechele out, true freshman QB Sam Ehlinger will get his first start. Ehlinger will be backed up by QB-turned-WR Jerrod Heard, who returned to quarterback in practices this week. Buechele didn't practice this week after hurting his throwing shoulder in the Longhorns' 51-41 loss to Maryland last weekend.
Sep 9 - 2:17 PM

Texas HC Tom Herman said that sophomore QB Shane Buechele will be a game-time decision for Saturday's game against San Jose State.

"This this will go down to game time how we manage it," Herman said. Beuchele injured his throwing shoulder in the Longhorns' 51-41 loss to Maryland this past weekend, and he didn't throw the football at practice on Thursday. That could open things up for highly-touted freshman Sam Ehlinger, who pushed Buechele a run for starting duties in the offseason. So long as he's healthy, Buechele will be the man on Saturday -- but even if he is able to start, it would not surprise if Ehlinger received some work. Expect Herman and staff to be cautious with Buechele at this early stage of the season.

Sep 7 - 9:18 PM

Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele was held out of practice on Wednesday due to a bruised throwing shoulder.

Buechele is considered day to day ahead of Saturday's contest with San Jose State. You all know by now that Texas lost to Maryland in the season opener by 10 points and a win over the Spartans is imperative before facing USC in the following game.
Sep 7 - 9:24 AM

Texas HC Tom Herman said that if sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) is healthy for Saturday's game against San Jose State, he will start.

Buechele is sitting out practice on Tuesday due to a sprained right shoulder suffered during this past weekend's loss to Maryland. While true freshman Sam Ehlinger will take practice with the first-team offense on Tuesday, there is no budding quarterback controversy, here.
Sep 5 - 12:12 PM

Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) will not practice on Tuesday.

Buechele is dealing with a bruised right (throwing) shoulder. His expected sit for Tuesday's practice is likely just a precautionary measure. The sophomore gunslinger threw for 375 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Saturday's season-opening loss to Maryland. Should his shoulder keep him from playing against San Jose State this coming weekend, true freshman Sam Ehlinger would be first in line to take starting snaps in his place.
Sep 4 - 1:59 PM

Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele completed 34-of-52 passes for 375 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Saturday's 51-41 loss to Maryland.

Buechele, who turned back true freshman Sam Ehlinger this summer in the competition for the starting job, added 21 rushing yards and another score on the ground. Texas' inability to stop Maryland forced the Horns to call so many passes. If it had its druthers, Texas would like to utilize Buechele's legs a little more and his arm a little less. As a true freshman last year, Buechele threw for 2,958 yards and a 21/11 TD/INT ratio.
Sep 2 - 5:02 PM

Texas HC Tom Herman said that if there was a game tomorrow, sophomore QB Shane Buechele would be the starter.

Buechele has received a heated competition in camp from true freshman Sam Ehlinger, but looks like he might emerge victorious despite his young challenger's strong push. Buechele threw for 2,958 yards while posting a 21/11 TD/INT ratio during the past campaign. Texas kicks off against Maryland two weeks from today.
Aug 19 - 2:43 PM

Texas head coach Tom Herman said he'll name a starting quarterback in about two weeks.

Herman wants a starter installed roughly two weeks before the opener against Maryland on Sept. 2. Incumbent starter sophomore QB Shane Buechele will have to fend off hyped true freshman Sam Ehlinger. Buechele completed 236-of-391 passes (60.4 percent) for 2,958 yards (7.6 per attempt) and a 21/11 TD/INT rate last year. We consider him the heavy favorite to open the season as starter until told otherwise.
Aug 1 - 2:41 PM

Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele won the throwing contest at the Manning Passing Academy.

Buechele is not guaranteed to start this season, although he is the favorite to reclaim his No. 1 gig from last year. His style fits Tom Herman's offense quite well, as the goal is to get the ball out quickly, many times on vertical shots, with tempo. Freshman Sam Ehringer is his main competition.
