Oklahoma junior LB Caleb Kelly said that he played the bulk of the 2017 season with a torn shoulder labrum.
Kelly (6'3/222) underwent shoulder surgery this offseason to repair the injury. The exact timing had not previously been known, but the linebacker indicated this week that he played through a torn labrum for the final 11 games of the 2017 campaign. He'll be sitting out spring practice as he continues on the recovery trail. Even with that injury concern looming over him during the most recent season, Kelly worked as a 13-game starter and posted 56 tackles, a pick and a pair of forced fumbles to earn All-Big 12 honorable mention from the coaches. Oklahoma junior LB Caleb Kelly (shoulder) will not participate in spring practice.

Kelly (6'3/222) earlier underwent offseason shoulder surgery. He'll mend through the spring, with the expectation being that the linebacker will be ready for action come the start of August camp. A five-star recruit in Oklahoma's 2016 signing class, Kelly started 13 games during the 2017 season, registering 56 tackles (3.5 for loss), an interception and two fumbles forced along the way. This work earned him All-Big 12 honorable mention from the coaches at season's end.

Oklahoma five-star LB Caleb Kelly indicated that in choosing between Notre Dame and Oklahoma, he placed the school names under a pair of hats and had his mom select.

Said Kelly, "I opened up the piece of paper and it was OU and I just felt a weight get lifted off of my shoulders. I was like ‘that’s it mama, that’s where I’m going’." The 6-foot-3, 222-pounder sounded legitimately split between the two schools, but Sooners DC Mike Stoops played an instrumental role here. As Kelly recalled it, Stoops told his mom during a vist, "Caleb knows that no one wants him as bad as we do, and we love Caleb and we’ve already created such a strong bond with him, why would he want to break that?"

Five-star LB Caleb Kelly signed with Oklahoma.

Unlike most of the kids on National Signing Day, Kelly didn't make his intentions known until well into the evening. The 6-foot-3, 222-pound linebacker out of Fresno was deciding between Oregon, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, with the latter two generally thought to be the front-runners for his services. ranks him at No. 17 overall. Site analyst Greg Biggins noted that Kelly's "one of those rare outside linebackers that can rush the passer, is strong against the run and drop back in to coverage." Biggins sees him as a weakside linebacker with the Sooners, but added that the Californian has the sort of rangey game you'd normally see out of a safety.
